Brian Scott “Gus” Kirsch

Brian Scott “Gus” Kirsch passed away at the age of 61, at his home, in Sioux Falls, on Sunday, November 6, 2016 after a brief battle with cancer.
Cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will take place at a later date.
Brian was born on November 30, 1954, to Robert M. and Betty Jane (Block) Kirsch. He grew up in Hills, Minnesota and graduated from Hills-Beaver Creek High School in 1973.
One of Brian’s most memorable experiences of his many, was the summer after graduating. Brian and friend, Rodney, traveled to Mexico enjoying many interesting sights and the culture. They traveled with Rodney’s brother to remote rural areas to teach farming techniques to the indigenous people of Mexico.
In 1975 Brian joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and Alaska. He received an honorable discharge on May 28, 1978. He later entered the electrical lineman program at Jackson Vocational Technical School, Jackson, Minnesota where he received his electrical lineman certification. During his career as a lineman he worked with several companies that built power lines in Arizona, in the mountains of Colorado, New Hampshire, Vermont and much of the Northeastern United States. Brian held many and various jobs around the area, in Oregon and also in Hawaii. Brian was most proud of his work as a rib technician the past 10 years at Dakota Cub Aircraft, Brandon, South Dakota. He was part of the team that built replacement wings for Piper Cubs (“bush” planes). These replacement wings were shipped to destinations throughout the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and the UK. His exacting and meticulous craftsmanship made him a valuable member of the team.
Brian was a soft spoken, quiet, caring and tender-hearted man. He loved to read and amazed us with his knowledge on so many subjects. He was a talented woodworker and carver. He had many beautiful projects in the making that will not be finished by his hands.
Brian is survived by his stepmother, Twila Kirsch, Hills, Minnesota; his brother, Barry (Jane) Kirsch, Riverside, IA; sisters, Barbara (Ron) Koch, Bismarck, ND, Becky (John) Fallenstein, Rosarito, Mexico, Deb (Luke) Mathias, Starbuck, MN, and Cindy Pohlman, Hills, MN; and many nephews and nieces; Brian also had a very special place in his heart for Sisily and Paulie.
He is preceded in death by his father, Robert M. Kirsch; his mother, Betty Jane Kirsch; his older brother, Robert Mark Kirsch; and loving aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.

My deepest sympathy to the family. May you Rest In Peace Brian. I knew him growing up in Valley Springs. All of us local girls had a crush on Brian. He was a sweet man.

Certainly wasn’t expecting to hear such sad news today .One of the nicest, most easy going, give you the shirt off his back people I have ever met . The guy would go without himself to help others . This work will miss him .
My Heartfelt sympathies to Brian’s family. Some of my best memories of my youth was growing up together in Hills. As it has been mentioned …now looking back even then his attention to detail was ever present. I pray that his memory lives on with all of us.
I went to Lineman School with Brian and lived and worked with him out in Vermont, Massachusetts, and Iowa. I am sorry to hear of your loss and his passing. Please keep me informed of his memorial, I would like to attend.
So many memories of the cousins growing up. Brian buried in comic books at family gatherings, staying with us, how he got that name Gus. Reading the comments above describe the gentle soul that defined Brian. Hugs to all the Kirsch’s.
Thank you to all who have left such great words and remembrances of Brian, our brother. He was a very gentle soul and will be greatly missed. His birthday is tomorrow, Nov. 30th, so say a prayer. The memorial service will be held in the spring/summer.

Brian kept notes with favorite verses and thoughts in journals and notebooks. In one small leather book he wrote, “Be without fear in the face of you enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth, always,even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless, and do no wrong. That is your oath.”
