Erika Cromwell, 46, Brandon, died Saturday, August 8, 2020, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls due to Metastatic Breast Cancer.

Visitation with family present will be 9-11am, Saturday, August 22, 2020, with a Memorial service at 11am, at Brandon Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be put towards her children’s futures, as well as donating to Metavivor, for Metastatic Breast Cancer Research.

Erika Ann Prahl was born on August 14, 1973, to Fred and Katherine (Green) Prahl, in DeSmet, SD. Erika was very active in high school.  One of the many highlights was participating in Teen Age Republicans. She became a legislative page in high school, as well as completing an internship with the state legislature in college. She graduated from DeSmet High School in 1991, then furthered her education at USD, where she received her B.A. in Economics and Business, graduating in 1995. While attending college, she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and was recognized as a top Economics major during her senior year. 

Erika married Steven Dew in Sioux Falls in 1996, and they had two children; Jeffrey in 1998 and Rachel in 2003. Erika worked for a few different companies before going to work at First Premier Bankcard as a Credit Workflow Analyst for over 20 years.  She was an active member of Brandon Lutheran Church. She also taught Junior Achievement classes for many years in the Brandon Valley School District.

Erika was diagnosed in 2012 with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. In October of 2014, she received word that she had progressed to Stage IV (Metastatic) Breast Cancer.  Erika was determined to not let a diagnosis of terminal cancer dictate her life, and set about living life to the fullest.

Erika married Chris Cromwell on January 1, 2016, in Brandon. She and Chris loved to travel.  Whether a family trip or just the two of them, they had many wonderful adventures together. They went to Chicago, and then on to Milwaukee for a Pink Concert. They traveled to Atlanta for a family trip, took trips to the Omaha Zoo, trips to Minneapolis, and went to Las Vegas to see Panic at the Disco.

Erika was known as the Queen of Transforming Leftovers, as she could turn anything into something awesome. At work, she was known as the Google Queen, finding whatever she or her co-workers needed to know through her in-depth searches. She loved family, family traditions, and family memories; acting as an unofficial family historian.

Erika started fundraising for breast cancer charities in 2013, completing her first walk after just completing 6 weeks of radiation treatment.  She captained a team that was top fundraisers for years.  In 2020, just a month before her death, she championed a fundraiser that raised over $1,000 for Metavivor, a charity that donates money to breast cancer research.

Erika will be deeply missed by her husband, Chris; two children, Jeffrey and Rachel Dew, Brandon; parents, Fred and Katherine Prahl, Lake Norden, SD; brother, Justin (Kyla) Prahl, Normal, IL; along with their sons, Toby and Zach; her lifelong best friend Lana Bornitz, Sioux Falls; and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

August 9, 1983 ~ August 5, 2020

Sam Burtnett, 36, Sioux Falls, SD was received into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, August 5th, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with depression. 

Visitation with family present will be 1-3 pm, Thursday, August 13, 2020, at Celebrate Community Church, Sioux Falls, SD, with a Celebration of Life at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Sam’s honor.

Sam Joseph Burtnett was born on August 9th, 1983 in Ames, IA to Dennis and Mary (McNelly) Burtnett.  He was raised and attended school in Webster City, IA where he continued to live and work until 2008.  He met Jocelyn Elaine Van Liere in 2007 while she was attending college in Webster City. They were joined in marriage in 2010 in Sioux Falls, SD and had two children.

Sam (Polar Bear) Burtnett was a big guy with a big heart and was so easy to love.  He was a grateful believer in Jesus Christ.  His passion in life was talking about Jesus and sharing the gospel.  Sam served at Celebrate Church in so many ways, greeter, leading Kids ministry- he loved kids and they loved him because he was a big kid himself, and he helped with grounds and facilities.  His favorite was serving as the Baptizer, always with a huge smile as he would baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, he loved helping lead lost people to come to know Jesus.  Sam also had a passion for Celebrate Recovery, walking with those who felt lost and struggled. Sam was a natural-born leader, leading as many as possible to Christ.  For the past 3 years, Sam worked as a FedEx delivery driver for Sioux Falls Express and quickly became Madison’s favorite delivery guy. Sam was the most fun person at any gathering and was the first person to greet you with a smile and a joke.

He will be greatly missed by his children, Amery (10) and Dayton (6) Burtnett; wife, Jocelyn Burtnett; his parents, Mary Burtnett and Dennis Burtnett; brother, Dave (Jill) Burtnett; mother-in-law, Lori Van Liere; brother-in-law, Marcus Van Liere; and many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and Friends.

Sam was preceded in death by his infant child, Sammy Jo “SJ” Burtnett, on May 5th, 2020; his grandparents Vera Mae and Duane Burtnett and Chet and Helen McNelly; his father-in-law, Mark Van Liere.

Clarona Ann Lindner, 86, Brandon, died on Sunday, August 2, 2020, at Bethany Home in Brandon, after a lengthy illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Clarona and her daughter, Donna, on Saturday, September 5, 2020, at the Sertoma Park North from 1-3pm. 

Clarona Olson was born on November 1, 1933, in Sherman, SD to Charles J. and Clara (Miller) Olson. She graduated from Sherman High School. After graduation, she moved to Colorado Springs, where she met John Lindner. They married in Colorado Springs on February 5, 1951. During the Korean War, she worked as a seamstress for caskets. Later, the family settled in Waterloo, IA. They moved back to the Sioux Falls area in 1970 where she raised her children. Clarona then worked at Litton’s, Lee Jeans and Mueller Pallets.

She enjoyed playing cards, BINGO, cribbage, attending card parties, and going to the local casinos. She traveled with John to Vegas, Allin, IA, Nebraska and Kansas. She especially loved traveling by car to Colorado and around South Dakota to see family. She liked to read and listened to the TV, but didn’t watch much TV.

Clarona will be sadly missed by her children, Johnnie, Sioux Falls, James (Sue) Williams Port, PA, Joseph, Sioux Falls, and Richard, Oldham, SD; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Charlotte Mueller and Mary Lou Hoiness; sister-in-law, Shirly Olson-Kuehl; and brother-in-law, Francis Tebben.

Clarona was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; daughter, Donna; four brothers, Charles, Robert, Irwin and Carroll; two sisters, Agnes and Dorothy; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Heather.

Marshal Gardner, 91, Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, after a lengthy illness.

Visitation with family present will be 5pm-7pm, Monday, August 10, 2020, at Heartland Funeral Home, with Masonic Rites at 7pm.  Private burial to follow at Hills of Rest, Sioux Falls, on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, with Full Military Honors.

N. Marshall Gardner was born on October 25, 1928 to Alton and Aura (Moore) Gardner in Sioux Falls, where he was raised. He left for World War II at the age of 17 when he joined the Navy. He married Mary Ellen Germany in 1949, and to that union, they had three children, Janice, Pam and Craig. After the war, Marshall started Gardner’s Hardware in Worthing, SD. He built race cars in the back. This property is now the Worthing Dinner Theater. Later, he moved back to Sioux Falls and started Champion Gas Station on 14^th & Cliff Ave. He sold life insurance for New York Life, sold cars for Jay Shon Chevrolet and Duke Tufty, and also sold mobile homes at his company, Gardner Trailer Sales. He later moved to Garretson and owned Jesse James Gas. He delivered parts for several companies in Sioux Falls, retiring at the age of 82. Marshall will be remembered for his great passion for racing and for starting Huset’s Speedway with Til Huset. Once he retired from racing, he enjoyed boating and camping with his family, and loved making fun memories at Lake Madison and Oakwood Lake.

Marshall was an active member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Sioux Falls when his children were growing up. He also was a member of the Optimist Club, the Mason’s, and the Shriner’s in the Clown Unit. He was a member of the Sport’s Car Club. Marshall loved antique cars, and had quite a collection.

Marshall will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Janice Falk, Sioux Falls, and Pamela Larson, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, Rachael Larson, Sarah Larson, Lena Larson Neeman, Rob Falk and Peter Falk; seven great-grandchildren, Ronnie Larson, Sadie Beck, Matt Tanksley, Lilly Tanksley, Nathaniel Neeman, Sophie Neeman and Sierra Lynde; two great-great-grandchildren, Kaydence and Ayla.

Marshall was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Craig Gardner; four siblings, Paul Gardner, Alice Thompsen, Chuck Gardner and Keith Gardner; his grandson, Matthew Larson; and great-great granddaughter, Alliah Larson.

Because of his positive attitude toward life, he made a difference every day for anyone that would have the good fortune to cross his path.

Marion Estella Jorstad, 73, Sioux Falls, was received into the arms of Jesus on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Centennial Cottage, in Sioux Falls, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Visitation with family present will be 5-7pm, Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at Heartland Funeral Home.  Funeral Services will be 10:30am, Wednesday, July 29, at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.  Burial to follow in the Salem Community Cemetery, Freeman, SD.

Marion Estella Iblings was born December 15, 1946 in Elgin, ND to William and Esther (Okken) Iblings. She lived on a farm near New Leipzig, ND. Marion attended and graduated from school in New Leipzig, then went on to Bismarck Commercial College. She worked at the Bismarck Hospital as a service representative for five years before moving to Sioux Falls in the late 60’s. 

On September 25, 1971, Marion married Duane Jorstad in Sioux Falls, whom she had met at church. She worked at Jordan Millwork before having children, then stayed at home with her 3 children doing daycare. After her children started school, Marion went to work at Midland National Life Insurance, where she retired from in 2010.

Marion loved to sew. She was a talented seamstress of kid’s clothes and also clothes of her own. She played piano and was also a pianist at church during high school, and loved putting puzzles together. She followed Augustana basketball games for several years. She was a member of Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church. She attended bible study at Shalom Reformed Church, BSF and also took the Bethel Bible Class at Hope Lutheran Church. Her faith was always very important to her and her favorite thing to do was to go to church and attend church activities. She volunteered at The Inn on Westport doing nails for the ladies.

Marion will be deeply missed by her husband, Duane; two children, Darin Jorstad, Sioux Falls and Melanie (Doug) Corp, Sioux Falls; son-in-law, Dan Bosman, Brandon; six grandchildren, Allyson, Aubrey, Ashley and Ian Corp, Carson and Hayden Bosman; in-laws, Sharon Iblings, Alice Iblings, Dean Neff, Donna Leder and Maurine Pederson (Jim); and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Heather Bosman; parents, William and Esther Iblings; siblings, Earl Iblings, Melvin Iblings, and Frances Neff; and step-mother, Elma Iblings.

April 30, 1951 ~ July 19, 2020

Carlos Emilio Cid, 69, Sioux Falls, passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls.

Carlos Emilio Cid, was born on April 30, 1951 to Isreal Cid and Blanca Jara-Navarrete, in Santiago, Chile. While in Chile, he was involved in politics and was the secretary for his political party.

During the unrest in 1974, he fled Chile to Argentina, where he established a family. Later, during the 1990’s he came to the USA (Kansas) and met and married Mae Lagang. They moved to Sioux Falls and raised their three children, Nelson, Kevin and Josh. He worked for John Morrell as a meat cutter for several years before becoming disabled. Later on, he had another daughter, Carla, with Jackie Peters.

Carlos is survived by his children, Nelson, Kevin, Josh and Carla and step-son, Steven; he is also survived by family members still living in Holland and Chile.

Deloris Arlene Teveldal was born November 17, 1933, in Alpena, SD, to Peter and Ida (Pederson) Teveldal.  She was the 8^th child of ten.  Deloris attended rural school through 8th grade and later, graduated from Alpena High School. She grew up on the farm milking cows and working on everything in general. Deloris had lots of fun with her brothers, sisters, and cousins!

We all lived close to our Grandma and Grandpa Pederson and they were fun and very nice.

Our Grandma always had “Cracker Jacks” for us that was really a treat and Grandpa pulled our teeth. It was “hard times” I’m sure, raising a family of 10 children.  Maybe bare feet in the summertime but always new shoes for school and church always and then went with friends for dinner at their house or invited friends to our house.  Chicken dinner always!! Our Sunday night Youth Group was sometimes at Grandma’s house because it was BIG and we would play games and devotions.  Otherwise, we went to the country church. We had a big choir and I loved that!!

High School at Alpena, sang in the girl’s chorus and mixed chorus.  Made first chair in the clarinet group!  Taught myself how to play piano.  “Honky Tonk” was we called it at a young age!!

As a Sophomore in Alpena High School, had a crush on this senior boy which turned out to be my best friend and husband forever.  I probably worked at every small restaurant in Alpena for probably .25 cents to .50 cents an hour, at the most.

From working at cafes, I was married one year after graduation to Al Schaffer.  Al went away to Germany for 18 months and I kept busy being a “Hired Girl” which today is called a “Nanny.”  Wages were $17.00 per week. 24-7 – crazy! Today, they get $17.00 per hour!!  I was living with young families bringing home a new baby with a possible 1 or 2 already at home!  I called it “training” for the future.  I also lived with my mom’s aunt and uncle and I was a caregiver and Al was still in Germany.  When he returned, we went house shopping in Huron and found a small apartment for $47.00 per month!! That was one of Al’s weekly paychecks.  9 months later comes baby #1; two years later #2. Two more years later, #3 and 9 more years later #4.  Still no girls, but all said and done I would not have it any other way.  I was a stay at home mom and we eventually moved to a farm.  We had a few cows, chickens, and a great place to raise the boys!  The boys went to the country school.  Eventually, we got moved to Minnesota with Al’s job.  So, the boys were in a city school now!!  Also, this mama now had to go find a job. 

My first job was as a maid at a motel down the road. Next, a seamstress at Men’s Coat Factory, then as a factory assembler at Lindsay Water Softener and in Shipping and Receiving at Lindsay Water Softener.

Then, we got moved down to Sioux Falls and left the 3 older boys in the cities and took Scott who was a 7^th grader along.  Again, I took to sewing and had a workroom at home.  I sewed window décor for a couple stores in Sioux Falls. 

Al retired and we went back to Huron where this all started! In the meantime, Dave and Lori sent us on our first trip to Norway.  It was a dream come true to be at my father’s home place.  It was still there!  Beautiful! 

Again, I went to work as a caregiver for older people and did some housekeeping.  We had 10 years in Huron and then cancer took control with Al.  That took its toll in one year’s time!  Since then, life has been lonesome.  I am thankful for my boys, their families, and friends! 

Deloris will be deeply missed by her four sons,  Douglas (Delores) Schaffer, IGH, MN, David (Lori) Schaffer, IGH, MN, Dick (Mary) Schaffer, IGH, MN, and Scott (Beth) Schaffer, Brandon, SD; eight grandchildren, Jake (Danyell) Lundell, Angie (Bob) Butterbrodt, Ryan (Maria) Schaffer, Ellie Schaffer, Linde Schaffer, Amy Schaffer, Kylie Schaffer, and AJ Schaffer; and four great-grandchildren, Marlo, Lucy, Bryor, and Parker; siblings, Olaf and Ivan Teveldal; and sisters-in-law, Luella Teveldal, Maxine Mastin, and Connie Crandall.  

Deloris was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; parents, Peter and Ida Teveldal; seven siblings, Lloyd (Aggie) Teveldal, Leonard Teveldal, Pearl (Dick) Krog, Leona (Russell) Hansen, Edna (Harold) Brandenburg, Verna (Leo) Koerner, and Lila (Max) Kludt; and sisters-in-law, Glenda and Liz Teveldal, Arlene Hotchkiss, Liz Schaffer, Carol Schaffer; brothers-in-law Leonard, LeRoy, Arnold, Vernon, Lloyd Schaffer (in infancy), Gerald Hotchkiss, and Elby Crandall; two nieces, Arla Brenneman and Dawn Woodward; two nephews, Timmy Koerner and Bruce Teveldal; one great-nephew, TJ Teveldal; one great-niece, Jacobi Goodell.

    Lee A. Haack, 73, Brandon, SD, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, June 25, 2020.

    Memorial Services will be 11am, Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church, Brandon, SD, with visitation beginning one hour prior.  Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Pomeroy, IA, at a later date.

    Lee Allen Haack was born on September 27, 1946, in Pomeroy, IA, to Herman and Marie (Gutz) Haack, the eighth of nine children. He was baptized on October 13, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, IA. Lee attended Immanuel Lutheran grade school and was confirmed. Lee graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1964.

    In 1969, Lee graduated from Iowa State University. While he attended Iowa State College, he served in the Iowa Air National Guard. Following his graduation, he worked as a Claims Adjuster for Equitable Life Insurance in Minneapolis, MN. It was there that he met his future wife, Elaine Anderson. They were united in marriage on September 4, 1976, at Badger Lutheran Church in Badger, IA. This union was blessed with two children, Jessica and Matthew.

    Lee worked as District Sales Manager for Allis-Chalmers, working out of their offices in Big Rapids, MI, and later Valparaiso, IN. He next worked in Reynoldsburg, OH, for Kubota as Regional Sales Manager in the construction equipment division. His final employment was in Fairmont, MN, working for Yanmar as a Regional Sales Manager in the construction equipment division. Following Lee’s and Elaine’s retirement, they moved to Brandon, SD, in 2013.

    Lee’s hobbies included watching ISU football and basketball, golf, and raising West Highland White Terriers. He also enjoyed taking fishing trips with his family. Lee was a member of Blessed Redeemer Lutheran Church in Brandon, SD.

    Lee is survived by his wife Elaine of Brandon, SD; daughter Jessica (Mark) Toland of Brandon, SD; son Matthew (Devan) Haack of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Abigail and Nathan Toland, and Claire Haack; siblings: Marcella Desormey of Minneapolis, MN; Charles (Donna) Haack of Spring Hill, FL; Carol Ford of Bellevue, NE; Judy (Jim) Binzen of Thomson, IL; sisters-in-law: Cheri (Eldon) Brue of Golden Valley, MN; Marlene (Marlin) Edwards of Savage; MN, Wanda Anderson of Savage, MN; and Karen (William) Johnson of Cottage Grove, MN; nieces and nephews and other friends and relatives.

Nancy Mae Herrin, 63, Valley Springs, died Monday, June 22, 2020, suddenly and unexpectedly at the Avera McKennan Emergency Department, in Sioux Falls.

A visitation with family and open house will be 4-7pm, Friday, June 26, 2020, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, with a short prayer service at 6:30pm.  A reception and gathering will follow at the American Legion Hall in Valley Springs. The family encourages everyone to wear sports jerseys to support Nancy’s love for sports.

Nancy Mae Jacobs was born in Wheaton, MN to Gordon and Betty (Walz) Jacobs on November 7, 1956, as one of six children. She was raised and attended school there. She left the area and married Mark Rath. To this union two children were born; Christopher and Danny. She later married Ron, and she was blessed with a daughter, Andrea. On 11/11/2000, she went on a first date with a strapping hunk from Valley Springs, named Don Johnson. She then added five more of his children to their blended family.

Nancy worked for Wendy’s as a manager in Sioux Falls, for a number of years. She was a CNA at the Tuff Nursing Home in Hills, MN for 15 years. Upon her retirement, she went back to work at the Valley Springs Body Shop, as Don’s office manager. In her spare time, Nancy enjoyed scrabble, Sudoku puzzles and word searches. She loved cheering on the Vikings and the Twins, as well as other sports. Her favorite tv shows included Law N Order, CSI, Family Feud and anything on the Game Show Network. She and Don enjoyed traveling to Minnesota, Texas and Missouri to visit her family. They also vacationed in Medora, ND. She loved the kids at the Valley Springs Lutheran Sunday School and her great-nieces and nephews. She made sure that everyone received presents for birthdays, Christmas, and any other holiday. Don and Nancy spent their last hoorah in Branson, MO, only two weeks ago, which included her whole family for four days.

Nancy will be deeply missed by her other half, Don Johnson, Valley Springs; eight children, Christopher (Theresa) Rath, Danny (Kasey) Rath, Andrea (Paul) Rezac, Eric Johnson, Amy Stassen, Michele Johnson, Tammy Webb and Deanna Bosch; twenty grandchildren, Skylar, Jakson, Dalton, Kristen, Kayleigh, Caitlin, Michaela, Emily, Alec, Jake, Alex, Logan, Lane, Shyanne, Chloe, Nealy, Rylea, Parker, Caitlin and Dustin; five great-grandchildren, Blakely, Sterling, Stryker, Aiden and Jensen; mother, Betty Jacobs; two sisters, Kaye (Jeff) Norton and Tammie (Terry) Finke; one brother, Brad (Joetta) Jacobs; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jesse J.  Flemming, 33, Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday, June 21, 2020, unexpectedly at home.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 7:00pm on Thursday, June 25, 2020, at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, Sioux Falls.  Visitation with family present will be from 5-7pm. Inurnment at a later date at Esterly Cemetery, Florence, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Sioux Falls Humane Society in Jesse’s memory.

Jesse James Flemming was born on December 17, 1986, in Watertown, SD, to Donald and Juanita (Koppinger) Flemming. He was raised in Brandon and graduated from Brandon Valley High School. Jesse attended Risen Savior Church while growing up. He lived in Sioux Falls and worked at various jobs as a welder and other positions.

Jesse liked to hunt, fish, and mostly enjoyed playing with his dogs at the dog park. He was very outgoing, loved his family and was always joking around.

He will be deeply missed by his mother, Juanita, Madison, SD; brother, Ryan Flemming, Sioux Falls; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his special dog, Charlee.

Jesse was preceded in death by his father, Donald Flemming.
