Charles Wesley Slaughter
Charles W. Slaughter, 76, Sioux Falls, peacefully went to his heavenly home early Monday morning, September 28, 2015, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In his final days, he was surrounded by friends and family who comforted him through their singing and reminiscing. Charles’s family and his continued devotion to God supported him through his struggle, and ultimately he found peace.
Family Visitation will be 5-7pm, Wednesday, September 30, 2015, at Heartland Funeral Home, 1801 Frontier Street in Brandon, with a sharing time at 7pm. A Celebration of Life will begin at 2:30pm, Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1600 E 12th Street in Sioux Falls. Interment will follow at Swedona Covenant Cemetery, rural Brandon.
Charles Wesley Slaughter was born January 23, 1939, to Rufus and Julia Mae (Johnson) Slaughter at Buena Vista, GA. Upon the death of his mother, Charles moved to Philadelphia to be raised by his aunt, Marie Walker. After finishing high school, he attended Trinity Bible College and met his wife, Lauralea Jobbins. The couple resided in Philadelphia for a short while and then relocated to Huron, SD. He worked for Huron Mfg. and then the DM&E where he retired. In 2009, Charles moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to his children.
Charles had a heart for others. Charles was an active volunteer in his church. He taught Sunday school, and served as a deacon for several years. Through his devoted service as a bible quiz coach, Charles was a positive influence in the lives of young people who later went on to spread the gospel.
His hobbies included watching sports, listening to music, and telling ridiculous jokes. He loved watching the Philadelphia Eagles. He loved a wide variety of music, but especially had a passion for Jazz, Gospel, & Doo Wop music.
Charles loved is family more than anything, and enjoyed going to family breakfasts and regular get-togethers. He signed all of his text messages to family with the closing statement “always here”.
Charles will be deeply missed by his wife, Lauralea; five children, Don Slaughter, Omaha, NE, Daniel Slaughter, Sioux Falls, Christina (Paul) Rogers, Brandon, Michele Slaughter, Sioux Falls, and Apryl Slaughter, Sioux Falls; twelve grandchildren, Sharissa, Devon, Elisa, Liliana, Olivia, Ethan, Mbiya, Soleil, JeoLioneh, Dax, Ava, and Everly; two great-grandchildren, Morgan and Tucker; and very dear friends, Lee and Janelle Peterson; and two sisters, Cheryl Lynn Slaughter and Tammy Slaughter, both of Auburndale, FL.
Charles was welcomed at Heaven’s gates by his parents, Rufus and Julia Mae (Johnson) Slaughter, his Aunt Marie Walker, and dear friend, Sharron Peterson.
Heaven is a lucky place as it has gained the most hilarious angel there ever could be! You will be forever missed my father and friend – always here. SEE YA LATER ALLIGATOR! AFTER WHILE CHOCOLATE CHILD! (W.A.S.)
