Derald William Bogenrief, 88, Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls.

Memorial Services will be 11:00AM, Saturday, December 19, 2015, at Heartland Funeral Home, with Visitation beginning one hour prior. Full Military Honors will follow. Private Inurnment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Assoc. or the Wounded Warrior project in Derald’s memory.

Derald William Bogenrief was born on September 16, 1927 to Stephen and Ann (Mongeon) Bogenrief. He graduated from Big Stone City High School and then was drafted into the military and served in WWII, in the United States Army, in Europe, from 1945 to 1947. Later in life, he was grateful for opportunity to take a trip to Washington DC, to view the World War II Memorial, sponsored by the Honor Flight of South Dakota.

Derald married Gloria Thompson, of Summit, SD, at St. Charles Parish in Big Stone, on February 10, 1948. The couple made their home in Big Stone where he worked in the granite industry. They moved to Watertown, where the Cave Supply Company employed him. He transferred to Brookings as the store manager, then owner, of their store in 1960. He entered into the insurance business in 1967 with Woodmen Accident and Life. He became a district manager for Northwestern National Life and was transferred to Omaha as an assistant manager. He then joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska as an executive Vice-President. He achieved much success and won many awards and trips in the insurance business.

Derald played South Dakota amateur baseball and had a try-out with the Minneapolis Millers. He threw three “no-hitters” during his career. Derald was inducted into the South Dakota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Derald was Cub Scout leader and Little League Baseball coach. He served in the church council at First Lutheran Church in Brookings SD and at Hope Lutheran Church in Summit SD. Derald was a Life Member of the Francis-Wayne VFW Post 5022 and was Post Commander for several years; District 4 Commander of the South Dakota VFW, and a member of the American Legion Post 229 in Big Stone, SD.

Derald’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, and golf. He enjoyed trips with his family across the US, including Hawaii, Canada, Mexico and the Bahamas. He spent weekends and vacations at the family cabin on Pickerel Lake. Many weekends were spent on hunting and fishing trips with his father, brother, son, grandson and good friend Thomas Bartholow. He retired in 1990 and spent several winters in Arizona. During his retirement years, Derald worked as a part-time school bus aid in Sioux Falls.

Derald is survived by his wife, Carole, of Sioux Falls, whom he married in Hawaii, on November 21, 2003; his children, William, Cannon Falls, MN, Shari Wines, Flagstaff, AZ, Ryan (Cheryl) Roethler, Sioux Falls, Scott (Kathy) Roethler, Stallion Springs, CA, Susan (Mark) Winklepleck, White, SD, and Julie (Fiance-Bob Natz) Hylland, Sioux Falls; grandchildren: Jay (Mikki) Bogenrief, Apple Valley MN, Carrie Niles, Forest Lake, MN, Marlo Schmidt, Chisago City, MN, Brittany (Josh) Moulton, Sabin, MN, Jessica (Fiance-Aaron Mortenson) Hyland, Sioux Falls, and Aaron Roethler, Tucson, AZ; great-grandchildren: Kaitlin, Andrew, and Hailie Bogenrief, Sari and Jaeger Niles, Emilee and Ethan Schmidt; great-great-grandchildren, Ryder Moulton and Lily Roethler; sister, Verna (Dave) Borgerson, Bellingham, MN, and brother, Stephen (Sandra) Bogenrief, Osakis, MN.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria; his parents, one sister, Mary Ann; one brother, Frank; and his daughter-in-law, Lynda.
