Doris Inez Sylvia Egtvet was born on May 26, 1929 to Alma (Nelson) Egtvet and George C. Egtvet, at their family farm, near Raub, ND. She started first grade in ND. These were the dust bowl years and the family moved to the farm owned by Alma’s parents between Dellwater and Balm Lakes in northern MN, after the death of her grandfather, Christ Nelson. She then attended North Fork Grade School in Beltrami County, two years at Fosston High School and graduated from the Senior and Advanced classes at Crookston Agricultural College and French’s Business College in Bemidji, MN.
She married Lowell Pierce on August 30, 1952 and the family lived in Oregon, Chilton and Waukesha, WI; Lexington, KY and Brookings, SD. Doris worked at the Teacher Placement Bureau at the UW, Madison; church secretary in Waukesha; stenographer in Lexington and bookkeeper for Prunty Construction Company in Brookings (1979 until retirement in 1991). Lowell and Doris built their retirement home in 1995, on the farm where she grew up, on Balm Lake. Her final years were spent at Birch Haven and Autumn Hills in Bemidji, MN and in Memory Care at Touchmark at All Saints in Sioux Falls, SD.
Doris enjoyed traveling – spending a summer working in the Rocky Mountains and then went on to Hawaii with a girlfriend, to work and attend school, where she met her husband-to-be at the Young Adult Fellowship group in the Methodist Church, Honolulu. In later years, Lowell and Doris escaped the north winters to many destinations. She also enjoyed fishing and gathering friends and family for dinner, dessert or s’mores, by the campfire! With children spread over 19 years, she was a long time 4-H volunteer and Sunday School Teacher.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband Lowell; parents; five children, Rodney (Diane), Pinewood, MN, Bryan (Gail), Eagle River, WI, Terry (Lynn), Southport, NC, Lonna (Kevin) Smith, Brandon, and Heidi (Donovan) Cate, Goldbar, WA; ten grandchildren: Laura (Matt), Josh (Megan), Jana, Matthew (Caroline), Kristin, Logan, Landon, Jazmine, Lily and Orion; two step-grandsons, Sean and Jared; six great-grandchildren, Jonah, Jude, Jaylen, Henry, Owen and Athena; sister-in-law, Nancy Egtvet, Bemidji, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
