Dorothy Elvira Anderson, 86, of Sioux Falls, died peacefully at her home on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

Friends may greet the family at a visitation on Friday, September 23, at Prairie Hills Covenant Church, 6000 East 33rd Street in Sioux Falls from 6-8pm. A memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday, September 24, at 11am. There will be a private burial at Swedona Covenant Church Cemetery.

Dorothy was born on July 14, 1930 in Worcester, MA, the daughter of Rev. France A. and Elvie C. (Sandstrom) Ericson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Salem Square Covenant Church by her father and lived in Massachusetts until the family moved to Jamestown, NY. In 1946, her family moved to rural Brandon, SD where her father pastored the Swedona Covenant Church. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1947 and graduated from North Park College in Chicago in 1949 with an associate’s degree. She returned to Sioux Falls and was employed by the Veterans Administration. She was united in marriage to John Eldon Anderson in 1951 and they moved to rural Brandon to farm her grandfather’s homestead and raise their family. The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1966.

Though she held several secretarial and accounting positions after all her children started school, Dorothy’s lifetime vocation and passion was that of a church musician. An organist, pianist and vocalist, Dorothy loved participating in worship through music and loved her church and denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Church. She was the lone remaining charter member of First Covenant Church in Sioux Falls.

In retirement, Dorothy enjoyed time at their lake cabin, travelling to visit their family and countless fishing trips. Dorothy loved doing handwork for her home and for her family. Dorothy and Eldon also spent fifteen winters in Edinburg, Texas, where they made many dear friends.

Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Eldon Anderson and their five children Janis (Frank) Rueping of Chicago IL; Karin (Mark) Youngberg of Sioux Falls; Luanne (Dan) Fondell of Dawson, MN; Mark (Andria) Anderson of Kodiak, AK and Julie (Curtis) Anderson Friesen of Sioux Falls, Grandchildren Emily (Nick) Burger, Matthew Rueping; Joel (Carrie) Youngberg, Kia (Tommy) Hofer, Krista Youngberg; Nathaniel (Ellen) Fondell, Elisabeth Fondell, Jonathan Fondell; Anna Anderson, Jonas Anderson, Baxter Anderson; Hunter Friesen, Elsa Friesen, and Great-grandchildren Malin, Ehlin and Soren Youngberg; James Hofer; Everly and Oskar Fondell; Brother Robert (Joanne) Ericson, Sister-in-law Arlyce Jacobson and Brother-in-law Vernon (Bonnie) Anderson, four nieces and nine nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents.

Hello, heartfelt condolences for your loss. I did not know Dorothy, but I have found a few cookbooks at my grandmother’s house (Jamestown) with “Elvira Anderson’s” name in them. I just looked her up to see what I could learn about her (if she cooked/catered for profession). I just love to cook and think these old books are gems. Know they are in good hands now 🙂
Peace to your family. – Lisa
