George William Ruhmann was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 14, 1944, to Dr. Warren Ruhmann and Hazel M. MacKay. His early years and primary school grades were spent in Providence. In the mid-1950s, his father was called up as a reservist in the US Navy. This began a period of moving around the country from Connecticut to Florida to California to Washington and back to California where the family resided in several different places. Despite the many moves during his school years, George graduated from Hughson High School in Hughson, California, in June 1962.
In early 1963, George enlisted in the US Air Force. After boot camp in Texas and computer training in Colorado, he was stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California. It is during this time that his enthusiasm for all things computer developed. He worked on computers for satellites and space travel.
In 1967, he married Marie Russo in Santa Maria, California. Their daughter was born in 1972, and their son was born in 1973. George and Marie lived in Santa Maria and raised their children until their divorce in 1989.
George remained in Santa Maria to be a father to his children. He also developed his computer consulting and repair business.
George and Ellen met while he was consulting at Visiting Nurse Service in Santa Maria. They were married in 1998. In 2005, they decided to slow down a bit and moved to Tyler, MN, where they bought a home and settled in. George repaired many computers in and around Tyler. He also worked for Don Buhl during harvest time. George enjoyed the rural life, playing golf, and would say “There are no stop lights or speed bumps in Lincoln County. This is the place to live.”
George is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ellen; also, his daughter, Lisa; his son, Marc; his step-daughters, Maggie and Kirsten; his grandchildren, Jordan, Jessica, David, Hazel, Katherine, Risa, and Marissa; his sister, Cynthia Mathieu; his cousin, Robert Broberg; and many friends.
George was preceded by his mother, father, and brother, Douglas.
