Kathleen Mae Viereck

May 26, 1933 ~ August 31, 2020

Kathleen M. (Mattern-Lemmon) Viereck, 87, Sioux Falls, died Monday, August 31, 2020, at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls.

Visitation with family will be 5-7pm, Friday, September 4, 2020, at Heartland Funeral Home, with a Prayer Service at 7pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30am, Saturday, September 5, 2020, at St Therese Catholic Church, (901 N. Tahoe Trail) Sioux Falls. Burial for Kathleen will be 11am, Saturday, May 29, 2021, at Homer Cemetery, Pierpont, SD.

Memorials can be made to Avera Dougherty House, Sioux Falls, SD, or St. Therese Catholic Church.

Kathleen Mae Viereck was born in Aberdeen, SD, on May 26, 1933, to Lambert and Esther (Underwood) Mattern.  She attended school in Aberdeen.  Upon graduation, she attended Northern State College and majored in education. She was a teacher at Groton Public School for four years while married to Loyal Spilloway, who was killed in an auto accident in 1959. They had one son, Mark, and also had another, son, Mitchell that died at birth.

She married Milton Lemmon, on April 6, 1961, and had four wonderful children: Chuck, Mary, Jim, and John. They lived on the farm near Pierpont until retiring from farming in 1991, when they moved to Sioux Falls, SD. Milton passed away in 1996. She later married John Viereck until he passed in 2002. She lived out her years in Sioux Falls where she spent her time with her family and many friends.

Kathleen will be deeply missed by her five children, Mark (Bonnie) Lemmon, Caldwell, ID, Chuck (Nettie) Lemmon, Pierpont, SD, Mary (Tim) Scherb, Valley Springs, SD, Jim (Lynette) Lemmon, Claremore, OK, and John (Debra) Lemmon, Indian Trail, NC; eight grandchildren, Dylan, Ethan, Kelsie, Jacob, Carly, Sami, Jessie and Josh; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Lambert and Esther Mattern; two brothers, Gene and Jim Mattern; three husbands, Loyal Spilloway, Milton Lemmon, and John Viereck.

    It was my pleasure to have know Kathleen since I moved into the Red Oaks apartments. She was always friendly and would stop to talk. May she be at peaceful rest Inn the arms of God and in the company of the angels and saints.
