Marnie Grace Mitchell was born on April 22, 1970, in Aberdeen, South Dakota, to Rick and Sylvia (Bebo) Mitchell. Marnie graduated from Doland High School in 1988.  Upon graduation, she attended Stewart School of Hairstyling in Aberdeen, SD. After working in hairstyling for some time, Marnie found her real passion as a caregiver, working as a CNA, then furthered her career as an LPN, after receiving her education from Lake Area Technical Institute, in Watertown, SD. In later years, Marnie worked as a bartender and cook at various locations and most recently she was the “meal maker extraordinaire” at Inspire Daycare in Tea, SD.

Marnie was married to Shane Fortin and from this union, Matthew was born and Shane adopted Sam.  Her boys were the light of her life. Marnie would give the shirt off her back to see that others had what they needed and help in any way that she could. She had countless friends that she met through her schooling, work, and playing darts. She had a knack for arts and crafts, but her favorite was painting.  Marnie always claimed she inherited this talent from her very cherished Grandma Grace. Marnie was an avid reader and loved many of her Netflix series.

Marnie is survived by her children, Sam (Kailey) Mitchell, Harrisburg, and Matthew Fortin, Doland; her beloved granddaughter, Layla Grace; her mom, Sylvia Bebo, Tea; siblings, Marvin (Denise) Mitchell, Redfield, and Roberta “Bobbi Pat” Hindberg, Tea; and step-brother, Danny Stickler, FL; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends.

So very lucky to have found friendship with Marnie not once, but twice. I am failing with words right now, but my heart feels so much. We will always be Dolly and Louise!

  • Oh Gramma Marnie! You brought so much light into my heart and life even when I was having a bad day or hard time. Whenever we hung out we always painted, did crafts, or found something to do together when we hung out. Even though you and me both had our ups and downs together, we still helped each other and asked if I needed support or help. You were always there for me when I needed it! I miss you gramma so much! Even when you are gone! Or even present! You will forever be in everyone’s hearts and minds when we think about you. You will forever be my gramma no matter what. You are MY GRAMMA. And even though you’re gone, everyone still made those times and will remember and talk about how fun those times were when you were here. And all the fun we had in previous years. I miss you!

Marnie you were a blessing to all who had the pleasure to meet you. I cannot thank you enough for the blessing of letting me care for your most precious gifts Sam and Matthew. I learned so much from you about life a d working with you at the Cookie Jar Cafe in Doland was a blast and helped me on my path toward my Cilinary Arts Degree. Your quick wit and sarcasm also rubbed off on me. You taught me to not take life too seriously and enjoy what you have no matter how small. You and your enture family have always treated mine as yours. You were like a big sister to me when I was young. My heart hurts for your entire family for all the heartache they are and will go through. I am here for them for anything. I will keep checking in on those incredible young men you brought u to this world and will carry you in my heart forever. God bless you a d fly high. Love you

Such sad news. Sending so much love to all folks touched by Marnie’s light, especialky Sosie, BP and Marvin. She was one in a million and I’ll always remember the haircut she gave me in college that showed me I had the strength to stand up for myself. RIP, sweet cousin.

Marnie-I’d let you carry me on more time across the street if you were here!! You always talked me into walking barefoot and I couldn’t walk on the gravel barefoot!! You goofing off and hiding around corners in your Grandma’s house and she would cuss us out for making a ruckus! So, so, so many memories from early childhood to adults. I wish I could talk to you one more time, but I can still hear your voice, and your laugh in my head. I hope that never goes away.

I wish I could have been there for you more. I wish I could have helped you more. I hope you know that I still loved you and regret not reaching out more in the last few years. You will always be a part of my favorite memories.

I have pictured your Grandma greeting you in heaven several times this week, and I can see the big smile on her face and you with tears of joy to be with her again. I know that’s how it had to happen…I keep seeing it.

    Rest Easy ole Girl.

    Love and prayers.
    Melissa
