Michael Alan Portinga

Michael A. Portinga, 56, Sioux Falls, SD, died Thursday, June 15, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Michael Alan Portinga was born July 23, 1966, to Alan and Carol (Iverson) Portinga in Willmar, MN.  He was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church.  He graduated from Willmar High School in 1984.  

Mike worked at Willmar Manufacturing and was a firefighter in the Willmar Fire Department. He married Michele Wipperman in 1990, and to this union, three children were born.  They moved to Marshall, MN, in 1999.  Mike then worked as a correctional officer and Sergeant at the Lyon County Jail until his retirement in 2019. Mike and Michele’s marriage came to an end in 2005.  Mike met his current wife, JoAnn Barton, in 2012 and he gained two step-children.  They lived in Clara City, MN, and Osakis, MN, and most recently moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in 2021, to be closer to his children.  They owned a lake place on Lake Osakis where Mike loved spending his weekends.  They traveled to Oklahoma, Colorado Springs, and Duluth and enjoyed camping with their camper.

The family was very important to Mike!  He enjoyed the time he spent hunting with his dad, fishing, camping, grilling, sitting by the campfire, attending car shows, detailing his 1965 Ford Mustang, playing guitar, listening to 1980s rock and roll music, attending concerts, and watching SDSU and Vikings football.  He had a large Coca-Cola collection.  Mike is known for his kindness and friendliness towards anyone who meets him.  He will be dearly missed by family and friends.  Mike will also be missed by his beloved cat, Digger, whom he rescued from the humane society.  

Mike is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his children, Corey Portinga, Dalton Portinga, Makenna Portinga, Bradley Barton, and Lindsey Barton; his mother, Carol Portinga; his sister, Michele Portinga; his nephews, Chris Petersen and Joey Petersen; niece, Kaitlin Valdez; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, and extended family.

Mike was preceded in death by his dad, Alan Portinga, in 2010; and his grandparents, Henry and Allene Portinga, and Arthur and Nora Iverson.
