Nancy Anne Waxdahl

Nancy A. (Valentine) Waxdahl, 72, Sioux Falls, died at Sanford USD Medical Center, on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, in Sioux Falls.
Visitation will be 1-3pm, Sunday, September 7, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, with family present. Funeral services will begin at 11:00am, Monday, September 8, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls, with Pastor Laura Borman officiating. Interment will follow at the Egan Cemetery.
Nancy was born to John and Margarite (Billam) Valentine on March 3, 1942, in Flandreau and went to school in Egan, graduating in 1960. On March 11, 1961, she married Robert Waxdahl in Pipestone, MN, and made their home on a farm 4 miles south of Flandreau. After moving to Sioux Falls, Nancy was a foster parent for 20 years for Lutheran Social Services. She did many things during her life, but the highlight was working for the State Democratic Party and individual Democrats from the state. (Tom Daschle, Tim Johnson, Stephanie Herseth and others) She also worked other jobs like the Census Bureau, Olan Mills, ERA Real Estate.
Nancy’s family was also very important to her and she was very active in their lives while they were growing up. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a Boy Scout Den Mother, and a Lifetime PTA member and a Sunday School Teacher. Nancy also participated with Women’s Circle, and organizing Lay Leaders and other church activities.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 53 years, Bob; four children, Carolyn, Scott and Brenda (Doug Kolhoff) Waxdahl and Marcia Leichtman, all of Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, Christopher, Nicole, and Jeff Kolhoff, and Phillip and Alex Leichtman; six siblings; Connie Wendell, Flandreau, John (Barb) Valentine, Chandler, AZ, George Valentine, Sioux Falls, Carol (Gordon) Olson, Minnetonka, MN, Linda Valentine, Brooklyn Park, MN, and Jim (Jeanette) Valentine, New Hope, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents.
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Nancy’s family. I used to babysit for Nancy and Bob when they lived on the farm south of Flandreau. Although I haven’t seen Nancy for many years, I still remember what a nice person she was to work for. I went to high school with George and Carol so I remember the entire family well. My thoughts are with you all. Keep the good memories in your hearts.

Sympathy to Nancy’s family. We attended Egan school together. She is now at peace and breathing well. Remember the good times and her wonderful laughter.
I wish to express my sincerest sympathy and condolence to Nancy’s Husband, her children, grandchildren and her siblings. Nancy and I were classmates in the same grade at Egan School, Egan, SD. I have known her since I was 9 years old. I will truly
miss her.

My sincerest sypathy and condolence to Nancy’s family. Nancy and I worked in the PTA and Real Estate many years ago and we always had a blast. She was already with a smile and had a great sense of humor that I know will be missed.
My condolences to Nancy’s family. We went to school in Egan together for twelve years. She was a character and a very interesting individual. Nancy could always speak her mind. One thing that always amazed me about her was that when we had class plays she was always the first to learn her part. She said she could read her lines before she went to bed, and they were in her mind the next morning. Bob, you had a good wife and you kids had a good mom. I am so sorry you lost her and that she had some miserable years at the sunset of her life. Warren Koester
My condolences to Bob, Brenda, Marci and all of Nancy’s family. I know Nancy will be greatly missed. I will miss her dearly as well. Sorry I couldn’t make it to her service. As Nancy’s family doctor, I can say she was such a great and caring lady. She always had her wit and kept me on my toes! I wish I could have known her in her younger years. I didn’t know she was so active in Scouting and as a foster parent. She taught me a lot about medicine, to care for the person and not a list of medical conditions and she never quit, fighting til the end. I always gave her my blessings at the end of our visits and she blessed my life too.
