Patricia Holmquist

8/18/40 – 3/18/11

Patricia T. (Fairbanks) Holmquist, 70, of Sioux Falls, died Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls.

A family visitation and memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, for Patricia, on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Heartland Funeral Home.

Patricia T. Fairbanks was born on August 18, 1940 to Hyle and Thelma (Anderson) Fairbanks in Puyallup, WA. She was raised and educated in the same area and graduated from high school there. Patricia went on to work for the Rainier State School for the mentally challenged. She was a care giver for over 30 years at the school until her health forced her to retire.

Pat then moved to the Springfield, Missouri area for a few years and then she relocated to Sioux Falls four years ago to be closer to her sons and grandchildren.

Patricia will be dearly missed by her two sons; Mike (Cherie) Connolly and David Connolly, both of Sioux Falls, ten grandchildren, and two brothers; David Fairbanks, Orville, CA and Warren Fairbanks of Ada, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ethelyn Gulseth

2/19/17 – 3/18/11

Ethelyn Elaine was born at home to Edward and Ebba (Johnson) Elofson on February 19, 1917. She was a life long member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church in rural Valley Springs and active in women’s circle. She graduated from Valley Springs Public School in 1935, worked at Gravelle Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, and in later years enjoyed her employment in the Brandon Valley School District as a teacher’s aide.

Ethelyn married LeRoy Gulseth on April 16, 1938. They were blessed with three children. Grateful for sharing her life are: daughter, Gail Hermanson of Brandon; sons, Richard (Kathleen) Gulseth and Douglas (Carrie) Gulseth – all of Valley Springs; her grandchildren, Gregg (Deborah) Letcher, Eric Gulseth, and Broc (Trecia) Gulseth – all of Brandon, Nikol (James) Shillerstrom and Joshua Gulseth, Sioux Falls; and her great-grandchildren, Austin Letcher, Aden Letcher, Torre Gulseth, Tripp Gulseth – all of Brandon, and newest great-grandson, Ian Schillerstrom, Sioux Falls.

“G.G.” loved sports and rarely missed a Twins game on television, attended local soccer games, and frequently called for updates when the games were away. She enjoyed the sun and outdoors. She was well known to all for her sugar cookies, peach pie, and homemade rye bread which encouraged visits from her family and young friends. She loved her church, politics, quilting, crocheting, celebrating special occasions, taking care of others, and her “little house” in Brandon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Ebba (Johnson) Elofson, her husband, LeRoy, her siblings; Iona, Pershing, Vernon, and Lyle, and her son-in-law, Dr. John Hermanson.

Gary Inglis

3/15/1939 – 2/26/2011

Gary W. Inglis, 71, of Sioux Falls, SD, died Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

Visitation will begin Wednesday, March 2, at 3pm at Heartland Funeral Home with family present at 6pm and a Scripture Service at 7pm. Funeral services will be at 10am on Thursday, March 3 also at Heartland Funeral Home with Fr. Charles Cimpl officiating. Burial will follow at St Michael’s cemetery.

Gary was born on March 15, 1939 in Aberdeen, SD, to Delbert and Alice Inglis (Meister).

As a youngster he lived in Groton, SD, White Lake, SD, Larchwood, IA and in Sioux Falls, SD. He graduated from Washington High School. Gary worked at the South Dakota Air National Guard until he retired in 1985.

He was united in marriage to Marie Soldatke on August 13, 1960 in Sioux Falls, SD. Marie preceded him in death on May 15, 2001. They lived in Sioux Falls, SD all their married life. Gary was a member of St Michael’s Church and the Moose Lodge.

Grateful for having shared his life are his three daughters; Deb (Dan) Buehner, Tammy (Pat) Stauffacher, and Brenda (Marv) Kneip-Merrill all of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren; Brandi (Scott) Flint, Kelsey (Adam) Maeschen, Danielle (Bryce) Bettmann, Kolin Kneip, Axel Stauffacher, Chris Buehner, Hannah Buehner and Lane Kneip, two great-grandchildren; Tenli Maeschen and Serenity Flint and Gary’s very special friend and fiancé, Lorene Thompson.

Ellen A. Carsrud

June 27, 1915 – January 22, 2011

Ellen Carsrud, 95, of Brandon, SD, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Sioux Falls.
Visitation will begin at 2 pm, Wednesday, January 26, with family present at 6:30pm at Heartland Funeral Home of Brandon. Funeral Services will be 1pm, Thursday, January 27, 2011, at the Swedona Covenant Church, rural Brandon with Pastor David Stene officiating. Internment will follow at the church cemetery.
Ellen A.Carlson was born June 27, 1915, in rural Brandon to Carl and Selma (Nordstrom) Carlson. She was raised and educated on their farm until she moved to a relative’s home to attend Washington High School in Sioux Falls where she graduated.
Ellen married Walter Carsrud on November 28, 1937 in Brandon. They moved to California for three years and then back to Brandon where they farmed and she cleaned homes. Two children were born to this union. Ellen later worked part-time at the IGA-Jubilee grocery store in Brandon, as a checkout clerk.
Ellen was a life-long member of the Swedona Covenant Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also a member of the Swedona ladies aid group. Her passions were many but greatest were her grandchildren. She loved to baby-sit them. She also enjoyed gardening flowers, reading, cooking and baking and sewing clothing. Her family has fond memories of her mashed potatoes, ham and bean soup and lemon pie.
Ellen is survived by a daughter, Cheryl (Richard) Erickson, Brandon, SD and one son, LeRoy (Chiko) Carsrud of Canton, SD, 4 grandchildren; Dana Carsrud, Aaron (Glenda) Carsrud, Danielle (Christopher) Bellemore, and William Erickson and 1 great-grandchild; Kristen Carsrud.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Walter, 1 adopted brother; Albin Anderson and 2 sisters; Edna Ellefson and Mildred Kepford.
A memorial has been established to the Swedona Covenant Church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Good Samaritan Center for all of the wonderful/loving care Ellen received during her stay with them.

DeWayne “Dewey” G. Bliss

June 14, 1946 – November 26, 2010

DeWayne Bliss, 64, of Brandon, SD died Friday, November 26, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Home in Lennox, SD.

DeWayne Gilbert Bliss was born in Canby, MN to Gilbert and Arlyn (Helgemo) Bliss on June 14, 1946. He attended school and graduated from Canby High School. He also attended and received a degree in heavy equipment from the vocational school in Staples, MN.

DeWayne enlisted in the US Army and proudly served from 1967-1969 with a one year tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a very proud Army Veteran.

He married Bev Jepp on April 4, 1970, in Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed near Canby until 1984 when they moved to Custer, SD. DeWayne worked a number of years for the Custer County Highway Department before retiring due to health issues. The family moved to Brandon in 2006.

When his health issues became severe, DeWayne resided in several care facilities; Custer Regional Senior Care, Johnson Memorial VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, Helping Hands Assisted Living in Brandon and since 2009, Good Samaritan Nursing Home of Lennox.

DeWayne especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in his younger years. He also enjoyed his family and was a very proud grandpa.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 pm, Friday, December 3, 2010 at Heartland Funeral Home of Brandon with Pastor Phil Larsen & Rev. Allan Holte officiating. Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm with family present.

DeWayne is survived by his wife Beverly of Brandon, daughters Marissa (Jay) Shook, Edgemont, SD & Denise (Tim) Jones, San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, JR, Lexee, & Wyatt Bliss and Isaiah Jones; father, Gilbert (Gerda), Canby, MN; brother, Paul (Linda), Brookings, SD.

DeWayne was preceded in death by his mother.

David Jerome Ziemer

May 7, 1955 – October 29, 2010

David Jerome Ziemer, 55, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was born on May 7, 1955, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota to Delmer and Nancy Ziemer. On September 9, 1978 he was united in marriage to Robin Matz. They have lived in Sioux Falls for the last 32 years.

David dedicated his life to Jehovah on March 31, 1971.

David was well known for the role he played in the construction of around 70 Kingdom Halls through out South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri over the last 27 years. He enjoyed landscaping, not just at the Hall builds, but also as a hobby. Serving as an elder in the congregation and helping his fellow brothers and sisters was something David dearly loved. His sense of humor and quick wit endeared him to everyone over the years. He also loved to read and could often be found with his nose in a book.

David is survived by his wife, Robin, his daughter, Nicole, his son, Michael, his parents, Delmer and Nancy; 3 brothers and a sister.

Maria “Lola” Dolores Vargas

May 21, 1950 – October 12, 2010

Maria “Lola” D. Vargas, 60, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Avera McKennan hospital after an accident at her home.

Maria Dolores Vargas was born May 21st, 1950 to Valentin and Salud (Cena) Vargas in Villachauto, Michoacan, Mexico. She was raised and educated through sixth grade in Villachauto. In 1970, Maria married Israel Araujo. This union was blessed with her two children; Laura and Thomas. The family moved to the United States (San Fernando, CA) in 1976 where Maria worked at home to raise her children. She spent much of her time cooking, cleaning, and even a little sewing. Eventually, Maria moved to South Dakota. She began working for the John Morrell plant in Sioux Falls in about 1993. Maria’s joy in life was talking to people on her phone. She would spend hours catching up with everyone on what was going on in their lives. Maria was also a very caring and loving grandmother and will be missed by her grandchildren.

Maria will be missed by her daughter, Laura (Joe) Araujo-Sanchez, Somerset, TX, and son, Thomas (Marissa) Araujo, Grand Island, NE; six grandchildren: Alexiz, Ivianna, and Aryanni Sanchez, Matthew, Vanessa, and Bernice Araujo; one brother, Angel Vargas; three sisters, Jesus Vargas, Consuelo Vargas-all of Villachuato, Mexico and Maria Vargas of Marshalltown, IA; and her very special friend, Martin Guiterrez, of Sioux Falls, and many nieces
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation for Maria will be held on Saturday, October 16th, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon, SD. Funeral services and internment will be in Villachuato, Michoacan, Mexico at a later date.

Vivian K. Finck

November 19, 1922 – September 18, 2010

Vivian Kathryn Finck, 87, of Brandon, SD, died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the Helping Hand Assisted Living in Brandon.

Vivian was born on November 19, 1922, in Tyndall, SD to George and Katie (Kloucek) Britton. She attended country school and then graduated from Tyndall High School in 1941. She continued her formal training by attaining her teaching certificate from the Southern State Normal School in Springfield, SD.

On June 18, 1944, Vivian was united in marriage to Leonard Finck near Tyndall where he farmed and Vivian taught school until deciding to stay home with their children. In 1978, Leonard retired and the couple moved to Tyndall where Vivian continued working at the Good Samaritan Center, first in the laundry and then in the kitchen.

Vivian retired in 1993 but continued to enjoy gardening, cooking, canning and baking. It was not just the holidays that were special times when Vivian was in the kitchen. Her potato dumplings, Christmas candy, and pickled beets were blue ribbon winners to all of her family.

Vivian also was a talented seamstress and loved to crochet. In fact, she sewed numerous items of clothing for her children as they grew up. The girls would pick something out of the catalogue and she would make it for them. When the bowling alley opened in Tyndall, Vivian was there. She once even teamed up with daughter Penny for a city doubles tournament and won!

Vivian was a member of the Tyndall United Methodist Church and the UMW circle. She also belonged to the Tyndall American Legion Auxiliary.

Vivian will always be appreciated by her children for instilling a sense of independence in them. She taught them about life, taught them right from wrong, and taught them how to take risks. She then set them free to experience the world fully uplifted with her support.

Vivian will be missed by her husband Leonard, Brandon, SD; four daughters, Sharon (Les) Larson, Duluth, MN, Peggy Patterson, Brandon, Betty (Gary) Schuster, Raleigh, NC, and Penny (Dan) Martz, Omaha, NE.; one son Terry (Brad), Seattle, WA; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dewey Britton.

A memorial has been established for Vivian to the Tyndall Good Samaritan Center.

Rafael Morales, 28, of Sioux Falls, died Saturday, August 21, 2010. Funeral Services will begin at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, September 1, at Heartland Funeral Home. Internment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at Noon on Tuesday, August 31, with Prayer Services at 7:00 pm. at Heartland Funeral Home.

Rafael Morales was born in Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico, on November 11, 1981. He migrated to the United States at the age of 14. He attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 2000. He studied to be a chef because of his passion for cooking, but changed his career field. He became a licensed journeyman while working for Midwestern Mechanical in Sioux Falls where he was employed for 9 years.

Rafael’s greatest passion was his 2 children. He was a very loving father who always enjoyed spending time with his children making them laugh. He also enjoyed playing soccer and music. He was gifted in playing the piano and bass guitar. Rafael was a very generous and giving person. He was very outgoing and loved being around people. If anyone every needed any help, Rafael was always there. He liked talking to and listening to people’s problems and especially enjoyed making them smile. He traveled all over the U.S. with his church, Iglesia de Jesus Cristo Palabra Miel, meeting people that he became good friends with. Rafael will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Rafael is survived by one son, Noah Morales of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Amber Mendoza-Morales of Sioux Falls; his father, Leopoldo Morales, Las Margaritas, Chiapas, Mexico; one brother, Carlos Morales, Atlanta, GA; and one sister, Florista Morales of Mexico. A memorial fund has been set up at Home Federal Bank.

El mayor pasión de Rafael era su dos niños. Era un padre muy cariñoso, que siempre disfrutaba pasar el tiempo con sus hijos haciéndolos reír. También disfrutaba jugando al fútbol y la música. Estaba dotado para tocar el piano y el baja de la guitara. Rafael era muy generoso y dadivoso personas. Era muy sociable y querido estar rodeado de gente. Si alguien cada necesitaba ayuda, Rafael siempre estaba ahí. Le gustaba hablar y escuchar los problemas de la gente y sobre todo disfrutar haciendo sonreír. Viajó por todo los Estados Unidos. con su iglesia, la Iglesia de Jesús Cristo Palabra Miel, conocer gente que se hizo buen amigo de. Rafael será profundamente extrañado por su familia y amigos.



Rafael le sobreviven un hijo, Noé Morales de San Diego, California; una hija, Amber Mendoza Morales de Sioux Falls, su padre, Leopoldo Morales, Las Margaritas, Chiapas, México; un hermano, Carlos Morales, Atlanta, GA, y una hermana, Florista Morales de México. Un fondo fiduciario se ha establecido en el banco Home Federal para ayudar con los gastos del funeral.

Kerry Mogen

July 17, 1950 – June 20, 2010

Kerry E. Mogen, 59, Sioux Falls, died Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Dougherty Hospice House.

Memorial services will be 1 pm Saturday, June 26, 2010, at Sonrise Baptist Church of Sioux Falls with Rev. Jesse Moore officiating.

Kerry was born on July 17, 1950 in St. Paul, Minnesota.  His parents were Donald and Esther Mogen. Kerry spent the early years in St. Paul, MN and then moved to Aberdeen at the age of ten.  He graduated from Aberdeen Central and went on to Northern State College.  While in school, he married Dianne Nelson in 1971 and had a daughter, Stacy Lynn.  Soon there after, Kerry changed his vocational plans and headed to Minneapolis, MN and launched a musical career that carried him all around the world playing with various bands and varieties of music. In 1980, Kerry married Donna Geiger in Cincinnati, OH and soon they had a son, Ryan.  On June 3, 2000, Kerry married Connie Crook-Jungwirth back in Aberdeen, SD.

Kerry spent his entire life pursuing his great love of music.  His was a skilled trumpet player, vocalist, keyboard player and even taught himself how to play drums.  He was a very entertaining musician and “front man” for several bands.  The last group he was with, The Great Unknowns, even played the stage of the SD State Fair.  Kerry was also involved with his church praise band at Sonrise Baptist Church in Sioux Falls.

Survivors include his wife, Connie, Sioux Falls; his father, Donald Mogen, Davie, FL; a son, Ryan Mogen, Midland, TX; a daughter, Stacey (Barry) Ellis, Miles City, MT; a step-daughter, Amy Jungwirth, Sioux Falls; a brother, David (Michelle) Mogen, Davie, FL and seven grandchildren.

Kerry was preceded in death by his mother, Esther.
