Penny Ann Guilliatt was born August 25, 1952, to Robert and Marilyn Dahl in the St. Paul area. She attended and graduated from high school there and attended one year of college before marrying Larry Guilliatt as he exited the military. Penny was a fun loving gal who loved spending time with her grandchildren more than anything. She also loved to read romance novels when she had a spare minute. Her dog Eddy, also occupied her spare time as her constant companion. Penny’s favorite event of every week was her outing with her children for dinner. She always wanted to know how their families were doing.

photoCharles J. Stultz, 61, Valley Springs, SD, died Monday, August 11, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, following a short battle with cancer.

Charles Joseph Stultz was born April 19, 1953, in Madison, NE, to Charles D. and Ann (Von Rentzell) Stultz. He was the eldest of nine children. Charles graduated high school from St. Edward High. He started driving trucks and hauling freight shortly afterwards. On September 28, 1974, he married his wife of thirty-nine years, Deb Acklie, in Norfolk, NE. They eventually moved to Dakota City and then on to the Sioux Falls’ area in 1988. Charles continued to haul freight right up until his health would no longer permit him to drive.

Charles truly enjoyed life and believed it was all an adventure. His philosophy was to not dwell on the negativity, but to keep life simple and enjoy everything while he could. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to go hunting antelope and pheasants with his sons. He enjoyed sitting on the back deck and watching the birds and just soaking up the peacefulness. Sports, and especially the Huskers, were also a favorite pastime for him. Card games and board games showed his competitive edge as he and Hope dominated everyone at Pitch. Charles loved his family more than anything else as they always came first. Giving his granddaughters rides on the four wheeler, teaching them to shoot guns, or reading them bedtime stories (which weren’t usually the real words but something he made up to go with the pictures), are memories the girls will never forget.

Charles will be deeply missed by his wife, Deb; two sons, Dana Stultz, Rapid City, and Dusty (Hope) Stultz, Brandon; three grandchildren, Athena, Aura, Rayleigh; his parents, Charles and Ann Stultz, Norfolk, NE; seven siblings, John (Karen Amend) Stultz, Norfolk, NE, Kathy Stultz, Lincoln, NE, Marcia Love, Gunderson, CO, Jim Stultz, Dallas, TX, Bill Stultz, Minden, NE, Dan (Boone) Stultz, Overton, NE, and Carlin Stultz, Dallas, TX; his mother-in-law, Irma Acklie, Madison, NE; and four brothers-in-law, Ron (Amy) Acklie, Clearwater, NE, Roger (Kathy) Acklie, Madison, NE, Neal (Diann) Acklie, Norfolk, NE, and Randy (Ieda) Acklie, Norfolk, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

Charles was preceded in death by a brother, Michael, and his father-in-law.

Family visitation and prayer services will be 5-7pm, Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, with a short service at 7pm. Marie C. Dye was born in Sioux Falls, December 29, 1917, to Harvey and Cornelia (Pederson) Dye. She was one of seven children and she attended Washington High School in Sioux Falls. After schooling, she worked at various jobs including house cleaning and working at a grocery store but she worked mostly as a preschool teacher. On November 13, 1939, Marie married the love of her life, Kenneth Moon, in Sioux Falls. Marie decided to be a stay at home mother for her three children. She loved children and had many ways to entertain and teach her grandchildren. She would babysit and play “reporter” by interviewing the kids with a tape recorder, or having them demonstrate their talents in dancing or singing. Marie’s influence rubbed off on the grandkids encouraging them to stand up for themselves, take chances, and make a difference in the world. She also was creative in developing books and stories for children. She wrote a children’s book, “Henrietta Hen,” for all of her grandchildren. She also was fond people, some of whom she would just walk up to and start talking to, and interview them for her scrapbook. She then would save photos or newspaper clippings of them on pages in her “book”.

Marie was also known for her nicknames for everyone. Her sisters were (Ann) Annabelle and (Violet) Rose and she was “M n M” for Marie Moon. Anyone who knew Marie, knew that the loved her giraffes. Her collection was endless. Something most people maybe did not know about Marie was that she was one of the oldest members of the NRA. Until recently, she loved to shoot targets at various places. She usually embarrassed the men because of her excellent marksmanship. Marie was very concerned about politics and what the government might do to her gun rights. She was usually up on current events and what was politically happening in the world. Even in the nursing home, people would come to her to find out what was happening in the world.

Marie will be deeply missed by her two children, Gwen (Eugene) Noonan, Centerville, and Ron (Donna) Moon, Indiola, IA; seven grandchildren, Patrick (Bets) Moon, Gina Hobbie, Gayle (Doug) Hansen, Jacques Moon, Jarard Moon, Nicole (George) Pokonosky, and Darin (Dory) Moon; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jacob, Lauren, Evan, Logan, Cameron, and Joe; and three siblings, AnnFodness, Luverne, MN, George (Jackie) Dye, Rogers, MN., and step-brother, Alan Dye, OR.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Sr., one son, Kenneth Jr., her parents, and three sisters, Violet, Jeannette, and Lucille.

Dr. Virgil Charles Inglett

March 3, 1917 ~ July 21, 2014

Inglett, Virgil_ovalDr. Virgil C. Inglett, 97, of Sherman, died Monday, July 21, 2014, at his home following a lengthy illness.

A memorial visitation will be 5-7pm, Friday, August 1, 2014, with a short service at 7pm, at Heartland Funeral Home. Inurnment will be 10:30am, Saturday, August 2, at Riverview Cemetery, Rock Rapids, Iowa, with full military honors.

Legionnaire of the Month
Dr. Virgil Inglett

In our continuing series of “Legionnaire of the Month” stories we feature another WW II Veteran. Virgil Inglett’s life story started on March 30, 1917 on a farm near Rock Rapids IA. Unfortunately, Virgil is no longer able to share the details of his long full productive interesting life. The following information was shared with me by his wife, Gerrie. Virgil always had a love for airplanes and has flown planes for as long as she can remember. When Virgil was 24 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Virgil responded by enlisting in the Air Force. He completed Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio TX. With the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Virgil wanted to go overseas and help with the war effort. However, the Air Force refused his request as they had other plans. They told Virgil he was needed more at Lackland Air Base. They told him that his skills as a pilot would be more valuable as an instructor. Consequently most of his remaining tour of duty was spent in Texas as an Aviation Instructor.

I hope to do more research to learn what types of planes he taught pilots to fly. Gerrie said he flew many different planes. I’d like to know–was he perhaps responsible for teaching some of the pilots that Col. Doolittle led in the 1st raid against Japan? Or did he help train some of the 1,250 bomber pilots who completed the heaviest Air Raid in Berlin in 1944? We will probably never know how many pilots he trained or whatever happened to many of them. But we do know Virgil must have had a tremendous positive impact on our air defense system of WW II.

Although Virgil owned planes and flew them Gerrie said his real passion was medicine. After the war ended Virgil went back to school and eventually became a Medical Doctor. He did his Internship in South Bend, Indiana. Dr. Inglett continued his entire medical career in South Bend until retirement in 1979. His wife Gerrie said he could see Notre Dame from his office window. Dr. Inglett still has the first dollar he ever earned from delivering his first baby. After paying the nurses and other staff, he had one dollar left, so he wrote the baby’s name on that dollar bill and framed it. Times were tough and cash was hard to come by. Dr. Inglett took whatever patients were able to give him. It sounds like they always had plenty of chicken or eggs to eat.
In 1981 Dr. Inglett married Gerrie Sutton. Gerrie had two boys from a previous marriage and Virgil had 2 boys and one girl from a previous marriage. In 1982, the Inglett’s moved to Canton SD and in 1992 they moved to Sherman SD. Virgil and Gerrie have been Legion and Auxiliary members of Post 23 since moving there.

Virgil and Gerrie remained very active in retirement and both drove motorcycles. They both enjoyed hunting and fishing. The above photo is of Virgil enjoying one of his favorite pastimes—fishing on the MO River. Although retired, they also worked part time. They delivered cars throughout the Midwest for Enterprise Rental. When Virgil turned 90 he felt he should retire from the “car delivery business”. As long as his health allowed, Virgil managed to continue keeping busy. One of his other hobbies is woodworking. He built 57 cedar chests and gave all but two away. When I looked at the one he made for Gerrie it was obvious, Virgil has some real woodworking skill. The top of this cedar chest had a beautiful inlayed design made with a variety of woods of different colors.

With declining health Gerrie has been Virgil’s primary care giver. Gerrie said “we hear a lot of bad things about the VA System but the Sioux Falls VA has provided better care than anyone else”. His care then included home hospice services.

I regret that it is no longer possible to obtain some of Virgil’s stories about his military and professional career. It would have been most interesting and fascinating. We want to say “thank you Virgil”. You have served out country and mankind well. The Lord has blessed you and allowed you to serve our country and mankind well over your 97 years.

Respectfully,
Marty Luebke
Post 23 Commander
