David Lee Helm

Helm_04-02-2010_21-27-13 copyDavid (Dave) Lee Helm, 64, Brandon, died Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls after a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be 4:30 to 7pm, Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, with family present from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Funeral services will be 1:00pm, Wednesday, July 2, at Heartland Funeral Home, with Fr. Terry Weber officiating. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

Dave Helm was born June 13, 1950 in Sioux Falls, to Clarence and Vicki (Shodak) Helm. He attended Eugene Field Elementary, Whittier Jr. High and Washington High School. Dave held many different occupations including a mechanic, a police officer, owner of H/H garbage service in Brandon, and as an over-the-road truck driver. Most recently, Dave drove for Sara Lee.

In early years, Dave spent a lot of time deer and pheasant hunting with his family. Dave also was a huge race fan and Huset’s Speedway was a big part of his spare time. He co-owned a car with Kelly Egan and worked on several cars. He boxed as a kid and continued to enjoy watching the sport throughout his life. Dave will forever be known for his storytelling and joking with people.

Dave will be deeply missed by his wife, Helen; seven children, Tim (Naja) Lemke, Sioux Falls, Christina (Bruce Crawford) McGregor, Sioux Falls, Jon (Kim) Helm, Sioux Falls, Steven Helm, Sioux Falls, Clarence (Jessica) Helm, South Bend, IN, Nathan Helm, Brandon, and Patrick (Shannon) Helm, Brandon; twelve grandchildren, Katie, Jordan P, Samantha, Makenzie, Dylan, Jordan C, Carys, Ayda, Mila, Mia, Shaylee and Zane; two great-grandchildren, Taylor, Amelia, and soon to be Baby Boy Page; two brothers, Darrell (Linda) Helm, and Dan (Joyce) Helm, both of Sioux Falls; and one sister, Jeri (Tike) Robinson, Sioux Falls, many nieces and nephews and Dave’s best little buddies, “Beans & Pooh”.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and one son, David (Dave) Joseph Helm.

Richard Lee Howard

March 24, 1964 ~ June 23, 2014

howard0001Richard L. Howard, 50, Sioux Falls, died Monday, June 23, 2014, at his home in Sioux Falls.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, June 30, at the Celebration UMC in Brandon, with Pastor Joel Higgins officiating.

Richard Lee Howard was born March 24, 1964, in Sioux Falls to Stephen and Ruth (Reiners) Howard. Richard grew up on a farm near Corona, where he enjoyed doing field work when he cdrive the big tractors. Richard attended school in Milbank and graduated in 1982. After graduation, Richard served in the Army where he was a tank operator. He was stationed in Germany and along the Czechoslovakia border.

When he returned home, he attended a technical school and worked as a machinist in Minneapolis. Richard operated a computerized plasma cutter making metal machine parts. He also worked as a mechanic for go-karts and bumper cars. Richard’s only son, Dana, was born while he lived and worked in Minneapolis.

Richard purchased a semi and tanker and became an owner/operator, hauling edible oils coast to coast. In 1996, Richard returned to South Dakota to work as a truck driver. He drove an auto transport, hauling cars from the auction on the east coast to Sioux Falls. Richard also had experience driving heavy equipment and dump trucks.

Richard was proud to be a member of the El Riad Shrine in Sioux Falls. He was active in many different units including sprint cars and the Highlander Pipe Band. He was a member of the director staff and volunteered at the Shrine Circus. Richard also volunteered his time to transport kids to Minneapolis to the Shriner’s hospital.

Richard was a very good marksman and enjoyed target practice. Once while squirrel hunting he was shot by his own dog. He sat his gun down against the fence without the safety on and the dog knocked the gun over and went off, winging him on the left side. After that incident Richard left the dog home when he went hunting.

Richard will be missed by his family and friends. Interment will be in the Milbank Cemetery at a later date.
Richard L. Howard is survived by his son, Dana (Katie) Howard, Tacoma, WA; granddaughter, Aubrianna; mother, Ruth Howard, Brandon; two brothers; Travis, Brandon, and Douglas, Ross ND; two sisters; Teresa Groth, and Amy (Stephen) Byers, Sioux Falls and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Stephen L; a sister, Kathy Jo; his grandparents, Stephen H. & Helen Jean Howard and Henry & Elizabeth Reiners; a brother-in-law, Robert Groth III, and a niece, Monica Howard.

Patrick F. McDonald

December 22, 1938 ~ June 22, 2014

Visitation will be 5-7PM Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, with a short prayer service at 6:30. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM, Thursday, June 26, at Beaver Valley Lutheran Church, with Pastor Greg Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Beaver Valley Cemetery.

Patrick Fenton McDonald was born December 22, 1938, in Madison, SD, to John and Mary (Carmody) McDonald. He was raised in the Madison-Argon area before the family moved to Sioux Falls where he attended Washington High School. After school, Patrick moved to the Kansas area, then to Utah and the west coast region. He worked at several different jobs before he returned to Sioux Falls. On November 26, 1983, he married Martha Alsgaard in Sioux Falls. The couple met where they worked together at the Ramkota Hotel. Patrick worked there for over 20 years. The couple had one son, Alex. Patrick later worked at the Brandon Pizza Ranch for 10 years.

Patrick loved to read. Some of his favorite books were from Louis L’Amour and James Patterson. He also enjoyed watching sports; mostly the Cubs, Bulls, and the Broncos. Patrick really had a special love for Alex and his friends. He spent much of his time helping kids for Special Olympics as a Bench Coach. Patrick also was a member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church.

Patrick is survived by his wife, Martha; son, Alex of Sioux Falls; and one brother, William (Peggy) McDonald, Sioux Falls.

Patrick is preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary (Carmody) McDonald.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Brandon Adult Special Olympics in Patrick’s memory.

Robert Earl Waslaski

March 16, 1953 ~ June 17, 2014

Memorial services will be Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 3:00pm at Heartland Funeral Home with Pastor Lee Green officiating. Inurnment will be in Langdon, ND, at a later date. Robert will be put to rest near his brother Frankie and his parents in Langdon. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Robert was born on March 16, 1953 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Frank and Evelyn Waslaski. He was raised with his siblings Richard, the late Frank Jr. who died in 2000, and his sisters Mary and Elizabeth. Robert attended Billings West high school. He married Bonnie Orr in 1971. In 1982, his son Colby Hartje was born to Deb Hartje in Cavalier, ND. He married Bonnie Fratzke on January 19, 1993. To their union was born Lindsey and Travis. Robert adored children and he said “The day that each of my babies were born, were the best days of my life.”

Robert was employed with Fortune Transportation out of Windom, MN. He loved being an over-the-road truck driver and seeing the country. He had driven in every single state except for AK and HI. Prior to getting his CDL, Robert worked in the printing industry. He was a member of the Local 49 Union of Operating Engineers. He enjoyed motorcycles, country music, time spent with family (especially his children and grandchildren), barbeques and movies with friends, and speaking like Donald Duck. He often tried to entertain young children with his Donald Duck voice – even sometimes kids he didn’t know. Children were drawn to him and he loved nothing more than making a child giggle.

There were difficult times in Robert’s life where his struggles created distance between him and his family members. He strived during the last several years to correct that distance, and his oldest son Colby said it best when he stated, “He wasn’t perfect. He made mistakes. But most important of all was that he loved my family and I.  I am forever grateful for the time we got to spend together. I’m gonna miss you Dad! RIP.”

Robert is survived by his beloved companion Donna Cole; step-daughter Nichole (Willy) Maskovich, Sioux Falls, SD; children, Colby (Amie) Hartje, Lancaster, CA, Lindsey (Tony) Linan, Springfield, MN, and Travis Waslaski, Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren (and the light of his life), Paige, Coleton, Nicholas, Tiago, Audrina, Logan, Landon and Eli; three siblings, Richard (Priscilla) Waslaski, Mary (Allan) Krueger, and Elizabeth (Kyle) Grove; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Evelyn Waslaski, one brother Frank Waslaski, Jr., and grandparents Stanley and Katherine Waslaski and Earl and Lucy McGauvran.

Dorothy May Allstot

Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 11:00 am at Central Baptist Church, Oakwood Chapel, Sioux Falls. Inurnment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Dorothy May Waldref was born on May 20, 1932 in Sioux Falls South Dakota to David and Luverne Waldref (Brewer).

On June 25, 1956, she was united in marriage with Cecil J Allstot in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple resided in Sioux Falls, SD. Dorothy moved to Bethany Home Brandon in November 2012.

Dorothy attended school at Hawthorne, Longfellow and Washington High School. Dorothy enjoyed working at the Jet Café in her younger years. She was a devoted mother and homemaker after she married.

She enjoyed attending Northend Community Church and Central Baptist Church. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #628 in Sioux Falls and the Center for Active Generations. For hobbies, she enjoyed many activities such as, music, cards, Bingo, Wheel of Fortune, although her passion was dancing and spending time with her family.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Gene (Paula) Allstot of Vermillion SD, Susan Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD, Michael Allstot of Sioux Falls, SD, Patty (Garry) Peterson of Sioux Falls, SD, Thomas Allstot of Sioux Falls, SD, and Tammy Myott of Centerville SD; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; her brother David Waldref of Chico CA and her sister Ellen Leris of Sioux Falls, SD; her special friends of Bethany, Delilah Merrick, Marlene Thorson, Joyce Shackle and Bernadine Hoel; and many friends and family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil (Buck) Allstot; her parents David Waldref and Luverne Leris; one sister, Grace Waldref; one brother, Franklin Waldref; her step-father, George Leris; her son-in-law, Tim Myott.

Robert Joseph Pollock

Memorial services will be 11:00am, Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, with Fr. David Stevens officiating.
Robert Joseph Pollock was born in Sioux Falls on December 26, 1960, to Bob and Maggie (Mertens) Pollock. He attended Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls and graduated in 1979.

On May 23, 1992, he was united in marriage with Lori Ann Davis. They have one daughter, Monica Lu. Bob was a loving husband to his wife, Lori and a caring and devoted father to Monica.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing with his daughter, and all types of hunting with friends and family for antelope and pheasant. He loved spending time outdoors with his dog and taking drives in the country with his wife. His other passion was car restoration – especially his 1970 Mustang – and car racing. Bob had fun times in the mud races and demolition derbies and always enjoyed watching NASCAR. Not only did he work on his own cars, he also helped countless friends and relatives repair and restore their vehicles.

Bob worked hard his entire life. He started out at Standard Oil on 10th & Cliff while still in high school. He worked for Ace Neon Signs, and then his automotive career took him to TMA and Big O Tires, all in Sioux Falls. Bob took over the family business, A-1 Cleaning, after the death of his father, and continued its successful operation. While self-employed, Bob also kept busy with side jobs; most recently working for Youth Enrichment Services.

All who knew and loved Bob, knew of his skill as a carpenter and craftsman. He used that gift to design and construct their home, and to transform old appliances and other forlorn items into gleaming, functional works of art.

Bob will be missed.

Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Lori, and their daughter, Monica; three sisters: Debra (John) Peters of Sioux Falls, Patty (Rod) Rand of Maynard, MN, Laurie (Scott) Markley of Sioux Falls; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his cousin, Gary.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Youth Enrichment Services or Pheasants Forever in Bob’s memory.

Jewel Richard Husby

Jewel R. Husby, 80, Sioux Falls, died Sunday, June 8, 2014, at the Bethany Nursing Home in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls with Pastor Siri Sorenson officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Inurnment will take place at the Oldham Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Jewel Richard Husby was born July 12, 1933, in Volga, SD to Hans and Edith (Dybdahl) Husby. He graduated from Sinai High School in 1951. He continued his education for two years, then enlisted and served in the Marine Corp from 1953 to 1955. He returned and finished his education at SDSU, graduating in 1957.

Jewel married Mylis Scott, June 1, 1957 in Oldham, SD. They moved to Aberdeen, when Jewel worked as Chief of Research and Statistics at the SD Dept. of Labor. In 2001, the couple moved to Sioux Falls to be closer to their family.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mylis; son, Jon, Sioux Falls; daughter, Karla (Dan) Brown, Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Marshall & Kallie Brown; and one foster grandchild, Hazen Brown; four siblings, Evelyn (George) Casper, Clara City, MN, Donna Lange, Sioux Falls, Joyce Arndt, Coon Rapids, MN, and Clair (Edel) Husby, Arlington; and many nieces and nephews.

Jewel was preceded in death by his parents; four adult siblings, Harold, Roger, Mavis Quam, Lorraine Matson; and one infant sister, Alice.

Ruth Eleanor Fast

Ruth Eleanor (McDill-Enger) Fast, 91, of Brandon, SD, died peacefully in her home, Saturday, May 31, 2014.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, SD, with Pastor Zach Sommerlot officiating. Inurnment will take place at 2:00pm, Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Ft. Bayard National Cemetery in Santa Claira, NM.

Ruth was born January 19, 1923, in Cicero, IL, to Samuel & Agnes (Lindsay) McDill. She married (Kenneth) Warren Enger on May 24, 1942. Ruth & Warren had two children; Ken and Heather. They were married 10 years before Warren died from cancer.

On January 6, 1953, Ruth married Milton Fast. They lived in the Chicago area until 1973 when they moved to Silver City, NM. During the time in the Chicago area, the couple had five more children. They lived in the Silver City area until Milton’s retirement in 1991. The couple then moved to Sun City, AZ. In September of 2001 they moved to Madison, SD to live with their daughter, Beryl and son-in-law, Walt Moser. In 2007, her second husband, Milton, died and in November of 2010, Ruth moved with her daughter & son-in-law to Brandon, SD.

Ruth is best known by her family and friends as a woman who loved her Savior. She loved to read and had a passion for God’s word. It was not uncommon to see her sitting in her chair, pouring over scriptures and she spent many hours praying for her family, friends, and many others.

Ruth is survived by her three sons; Ken Enger, Colorado Springs, Kevin (Adelina) Fast, Albuquerque, NM, and Dan (Valerie) Fast, Las Cruces, NM; two daughters, Heather (Creighton) Bell, El Paso, TX, Beryl (Walt) Moser, Brandon, SD; two daughter-in-laws, Kassie Enger, Colorado Springs, CO, and Betty Fast, Tucson, AZ.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas (Doris) McDill; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel & Agnes McDill; two husbands, Warren Enger and Milton Fast; two sons, Timothy Fast and Lorin Fast; one brother, Samuel McDill IV; two sisters, Angie Gibbs and Rose McDill; a granddaughter, Emily Fast; and one great-granddaughter, Roselyn Fast.

Blanche J. (Baily) Stryzewski, 83, Sioux Falls, died peacefully, Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, with her family and close friends around her.

Survivors include her four sons, Mark (Norma), Scott (Faye) Grant, and Lee; one daughter, Ruth (Gary) Powell; one sister, Fran Bartle and one brother, R.B. (Vi) Baily; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Richard Charles Sunde

Richard C. Sunde, 83, Sioux Falls, formerly of Madison, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, SD, on Friday, May 30, 2014. Richard has elected to donate his body to science. Eventual inurnment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

Richard Charles Sunde was born April 17, 1931, to Leon and Olga (Stephenson) Sunde in Madison, SD and he was raised on the family farm near Madison. Upon his graduation from Madison High School, Dick enlisted in the US Air Force where he served as a MP and in the Air Force Honor Guard while serving in Washington, DC. When Dick returned to Madison, he began working as the Assistant Manager of the Farmer’s Coop. On June 13, 1955, Richard married the love of his life, Janet Westby, in Sioux Falls. The couple resided in Madison while they raised their five children. Dick was very gifted in construction and worked as a carpenter for several companies including John Morrell, construction of the Western Mall, and maintenance at Dakota State College. In 1976, Dick moved the family to Sioux Falls. He worked in maintenance (carpentry) for McKennan Hospital until his “official” retirement. Not sitting idle, Richard started driving bus for the City of Sioux Falls and driving freight for Cross Country Courier. Richard and Janet were able to enjoy about 14 winters in Arizona. That gave them time to be with their son, Steve and his wife, Debbie. They cherished their time there and enjoyed every minute of it! He also used his woodworking skills to help construct the first trolley of Sioux Falls and was instrumental in the development of the Butterfly House.

Dick was a very generous and giving person and would do almost anything to help someone; even giving his body to the USD School of Medicine for study. He loved kids and volunteered with Scouts, coached little league baseball, and drove cheerleaders to local high school games. He loved to play with and talk to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church while in Madison. He had many hobbies and was very skilled in wood crafts and stained glass art. He created many wood carving crafts and nick-knacks for family and friends that are treasured by all. Dick loved to restore old cars. He did this when he lived in Madison. He was a member of the Horseless Carriage Club and drove his Model-T.

Richard will be deeply missed by his wife of 58 years, Janet, five children, Steve (Deb), Phoenix, AZ, Laurel (Mike) Eicher, Madison, WI, Joan (Jim) Clarke, Sioux Falls, David (Julie), Sioux Falls, and Paul (Christie), Sioux Falls; grandchildren Marissa (Zac) Cool, Chelsea Stein, Nicholas (Brianna) Clarke, Erica (Eric) Napier, Caleb (Samantha) Sunde, and Jules Eicher; great-grandchildren, Avery and Zayden Cool, Carter and Cambree Stein, and soon to be baby boy Clarke; and 6 siblings, Jim (Betty) Sunde, Madison, Lois Ronning, Sioux Falls, Dorothy Downs, Madison, Marian (Monte) Wiese, Madison, Marley (Jim) Smith, San Lorenzo, CA, and Midge (Jim) Kloster, Fargo, ND, and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Neva Smith.
