Sandra Lee Matson was born April 21, 1938, to George SR. and Arlie (Blanchar) Matson, in Sherburn, MN. She attended school and graduated from Trimont High School. Sandi then attended Mankato State University for three years before she was united in marriage to John Carlson on February 7, 1959. The couple settled in Spencer, IA, to start their family where Sandi also finished her teaching degree. She started teaching Phy Ed in Spencer until 1978, when the family moved to Brandon. Sandi started as a librarian in the Brandon school system, coached volleyball, and taught reading skills until retiring in 2002.
Sandi will be remembered as an awesome cook by her family. She loved animals and was often seen walking her dog at Big Sioux Rec in Brandon. She was an avid bird watcher and was involved in a bird watching group in Sioux Falls. John and Sandi’s favorite place was their farm on the lake at Trimont. Sandi loved music and enjoyed hunting agates, both of which carried over to her grandchildren. All who knew Sandi knew of her love for sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, and Gophers.
Sandi will be deeply missed by her husband of 58 years, John Carlson; three children, Kim (Alan) Johnson, Willmar, MN, Scott Carlson, Brandon, and Randy (Valerie) Carlson, Brandon; four grandchildren, Abbey, (Matt) Roisum, Seth Johnson, Jake Carlson, and Courtney Carlson; one great-grandchild, Hadley Roisum; one sister, Linda Lillegard, Omaha, NE; and one sister-in-law, Sylvia Matson.
Sandi is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, George Matson, JR.
So sorry, John to hear of your loss……have long ago memories of graduating from TM Highschool together and a lot of years have followed since then, going by too fast. Now have a grand daughter moved near Sioux Falls maybe not far from you.
