Virgil Eugene Rogers was born February 26, 1939, in Burke, SD, to Doris Rogers. He attended school in Pierre, through the eighth grade when he left to start working full time on the farm for his uncle. Virgil basically farmed until 1996, when his health no longer allowed him to continue. Also in July 1996, Virgil married Marti Kron in Onida. The couple resided in Pierre until they moved to Sioux Falls in 2000. The couple worked side by side for Service Master cleaning commercial buildings.
Virgil was a man of simplicity. He worked hard and loved to read his Bible. It was his favorite pastime. He especially enjoyed having Bible study and lunch at his home. He also really loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Any time he could be involved in their lives, he found joy. Whether it was being reminded to fill up his coffee “to the rim” or chasing someone down the hall with a face full of shave cream, asking for a “Kiss and a moochie”, Virgil’s teasing and his contagious laughter will be somethings everyone will remember. You couldn’t help but laugh along with him when you heard it.
Virgil is survived by his wife, Marti; two daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Quinn, Rapid City, Darcy (Darin Prins) Rogers, Hardwick, MN; two stepdaughters, Tammy (Larry) Lange, Grandforks, ND, Teresa Peterson, Newfolden, MN; eleven grandchildren, Mandi, LaRae, Jacob, Kassandra, Megan, Janelle, Ethan, Sarah, Levi, Travis, and Kyle; sixteen great-grandchildren, Kyliauna, Haileigh, Carson, Kaydence, Urijah, Kenny, Shayleene, Shauna, Brieanna, Dallen, Keenan, Roirey, Emmaly, Samatha, Kaylee, and Zack; two siblings, Dwayne Mutucha, Burke, and Dorothy Kirney, Wagner; and two sister-in-laws, Mary Mutucha, Burke and Gladys Smith, Idaho.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lyle Smith, George Mutucha; one daughter, Brenda Hoffman, and “Grandpa J” Rogers.

My sympathy to the family for your loss. May you find comfort in your cherished memories. True, remembering those times may be painful at first, but in time those memories will help you to heal. While grief at the loss of Mr. Rogers is certainly great, the joy you will have at welcoming him back in the promised resurrection will be so much greater! (Acts 24:15; Mark 5:42)

Prayers to your family in the difficult time. I have know the Rogers family for many years. Virgil was a hard working man and really loved his family. Remember the good times and all the joy he brought to your lives.

  • I was sorry to learn of Virgil’s death. I have many memories of Virgil as a young boy and young man. He was a joy to be around and I can’t remember a time when he didn’t have a beautiful smile when we would meet. There must be a lot of smiles and joyous greetings for him from Grandpa Jay, Aunt Helen, and the list is long—but I’m sure Virgil is returning all of their smiles!
