November 12, 1953 ~ June 5,2021

Benjamin “Wes” Garcia, age 67, of Hettinger, ND; formerly of Sioux Falls, SD; died early Saturday morning, June 5,2021, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.

Cremation has taken place. The family intends to have a small service for Wes to remember him and pay respects at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, SD.  Please check back for updates on time and location for the services. 

As many knew him, Wes was a Reverend, teacher, therapist, and, of course, a model train enthusiast. During his time on Earth, Wes tried to take care of everyone and give his full attention to the people he loved the most. Yet, his ability to bring people together for a common goal is what leaves an impact on so many he was able to meet in his life. 

Wes was an active member of the Downtown Kiwanis in Sioux Falls and the DSED train club.  He served for many years on the diversity committee for Minnehaha County.  He was involved in many groups and activities that promoted equality and diversity.

During his battle with COP (Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia) Wes never gave up hope. Even until the end, he knew he was going to meet the Lord due to his devout faith and made sure he spent time passing his memories on to others. 

Wes is survived by his wife, Janet, Hettinger, ND; 2 daughters, Amie (Brett) Henderson, Hettinger, ND; and Carolynn (John) Moore, Springfield, VA; a son, Chris Garcia, Minneapolis, MN; and grandchildren, Isaiah, and Isaac Moore; Alyssa, Luke, and Olivia Henderson, and his brother Eugene Garcia, Hettinger, ND. 

Wes is preceded in death by his parents Benito & Blanche Garcia. 

September 6, 1963 ~ June 2, 2021

Brian N. Honken, 57, Sioux Falls, died Monday, June 2, 2021, at the Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, after a long battle with cancer.

No services are planned at this time.

Brian Nick Honken was born in Sioux Falls, SD on September 6, 1963 to Willie and Gladys (Swier) Honken.  He was one of four boys.  Brian graduated from Brandon Valley High School.  He was a very compassionate person especially to the elderly.  Family and friends meant so much to him and he missed his brothers very much.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Katie and his son, Mark, of Arkansas; parents, Willie and Gladys Honken, Sioux Falls; other special people in Brian’s life include Lori Honken, Omaha; Karen Pearson, Alcester; Ron Bosch, Sioux Falls; Elaine Swier, Crooks; Vonnie Baumberger, Dell Rapids; and Tracey Kuemper, Sioux Falls; his beloved dog, Zoie; and many nieces and nephews.

Brian is preceded in death by his three brothers, Mark, Brad and Chad; and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation in Brian’s memory.

March 18, 1970 ~ April 28, 2021

Brian E. Scrivner, 51, Sioux Falls, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 28, 2021, in the early morning hours, as he was walking to work, in Sioux Falls, SD.

No services are planned at this time.

Brian Edward Scrivner was born on March 18, 1970, to Lairie and Sally (McQuaid) Scrivner in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he spent much of his life.

To those of you who knew Brian, you know that he dealt with a great deal of adversity during his life, but he never lost his faith, nor his drive to push forward and look toward happiness and a making a better life. Brian was always willing to offer support and assistance to friends and loved ones alike; No matter what challenges he faced in his own life, he never lost his to drive overcome them and look for the positive message in every life lesson.  

Brian was always willing to reach out, and try to find similarities between people, not focus on their differences. It was perhaps his greatest strength.  Brian was always grateful for the love and friendships in his life, and always did his very best to stay in contact with everyone.  When we remember Brian, I know we will all remember his gentleness, kindness, and his genuinely thoughtful and caring spirit.

Brian is survived by his mother, Sally, and brother, Stephen (Linda) Scrivner. Brian was preceded in death by his father, Lairie.  

July 7, 1970 ~ April 21, 2021

Wade A. Schroeder, 50, Atlanta, GA, formerly, Corson, SD, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, April 21, 2021, from coronary issues, in Birmingham, AL.

Memorial Services are planned for 2pm, Saturday, May 1, 2021, at Heartland Funeral Home. Visitation with family present will begin at 12:00 Noon. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial for Wade has been established.

Wade Alan Schroeder was born on July 7, 1970, to Lyle G and Helen (Nordstrom) Schroeder and lived on an acreage north of Corson, SD. His family moved into his childhood home of Corson, SD, in 1971, where he lived most of his life.  He was the third of four children and well-known to all residents of Corson.  Wade attended Valley Springs Elementary from kindergarten through 6th grade.  As a child, he was curious about how things worked, always up for a game of kickball or softball with the Corson kids, and helped out on his Grandpa Alex’s farm with hauling hay, walking beans or chasing cattle. He graduated from Brandon Valley High School in May 1988.  In high school, Wade worked at the Luxembourg Cafe in Corson and discovered his love for cooking.  Wade made many delicious meals and enjoyed cooking for others.  

Wade found his love of drawing and creating graphics while in high school and made a career out of his passion.  Wade attended Southeast Technical Institute located in downtown Sioux Falls and graduated with a graphic design degree. He designed many T-shirts for local sprint car drivers in his early 20’s.  Anyone could find Wade at Huset’s Speedway every weekend during racing season.  He enjoyed camping with friends and trips to Cancun Mexico.

Wade married Lori Mullenix on April 12, 2003.  They moved to northwestern Georgia in 2017, for work for Fast Signs. Wade loved the area. He had no fear and lived life to the fullest. He was bigger than life.  He had a quick-wit with one-liners followed by his mischievous grin, but he had a heart of gold and would help anyone anytime. 

Wade will be deeply missed by his mother, Helen Jacobson, Brandon; siblings, Deann (Brian) DenHerder, Luverne, MN, Aaron Schroeder, Brandon, Teresa Schroeder, Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews, Keaton Jackson, Nick DenHerder, Rachel DenHerder, Haley Berglund; step-children, Brandon Smith, Kelsey, and Kourtney Mullenix; four step-grandchildren, Madison, Hayleigh, Colt, and Haydn; Uncle Dennis (Aunt Joanne) Nordstrom, Orange, CT, Aunt Elaine Gustafson, Ortonville, MN, Uncle Myron Bunger, Harrisburg, SD, Aunt Joanne (Uncle Leo) Heggen, Brandon, SD, Aunt Karen (Uncle Bob) Saxer, Absarokee, MT, and Aunt Janelle Schroeder, Denver, CO; along with several cousins.

Wade was preceded in death by his father, Lyle G. Schroeder; grandparents, Glenn and Arlene Schroeder, Alex and Ethel Nordstrom; uncles and aunts, Melvin and Shari Jones, Peggy Bunger, Neil and Glenice McNab, Carroll and Marietta Nordstrom, and Ronald Gustafson; and cousin, Damon Bunger. 

June 15, 1942 ~ April 21, 2021

David A. Rothstein, 78, Brandon, died Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at his home in Brandon.

No services are planned at this time per his wishes.

David was the greatest DAD and PAPA and he will be greatly missed by all.  To know him, was to love him.  This is not a goodbye, but a “Till we see you again”. 

David will be deeply missed by his children, Dani (Joe) Bruntz, Brandon, and Julie Widmann, Brandon; grandchildren, Courtney and Chea Bruntz, Brooklyn and Trevor Widmann, and Jillyan Jackson; great-grandchildren, Brody and Conor Sullivan and Zoe Biliu; and one brother, John (Vicki) Rothstein.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and James L Rothstein; and his two brothers, Mike and Jim Rothstein. 

November 9, 1960 ~ April 19, 2021

Tom L. Zimmer, 60, Sioux Falls, died Monday, April 19, 2021, at Ava’s House, after a brief illness.

A Celebration of Life will be Sunday, June 13, 2021, from 4-8pm, at the Cherry Rock Park picnic shelter, in Sioux Falls.

Tom will be deeply missed by his wife, Dede; his children, Beth (John) Williams, Jadyn Zimmer, Brea Zimmer, Zaya Zimmer and Joshua (Tina) West; three grandchildren, Lottie, Landry and Susan; siblings, Kathy (Dave) Lambertz, Brenda (Kevin) Frankman, John Zimmer, Robert (Lori) Zimmer, Joe (Kristie) Zimmer, Paul (Teresa) Zimmer, Mary Englund, and Sarah (Steve) Colford; brother-in-law, Robert Solheim, and Jim’s fiance (before he passed), Heidi Merkel.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Joyce, Francis, Carol and Jim.

Donna Marie Brese, 65, Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully in her sleep, on Thursday, April 15, 2021, after a courageous battle with a terminal illness.

Donna Marie Scheffelmaer was born on May 17, 1955, in Harlem, MT, to Otto and Lela (Nielsen) Scheffelmaer.

Donna will be deeply missed by her husband, Ken Brese, Sioux Falls; children, Chris Buckman and Jim (Keri) Buckman, Sioux Falls; special daughter in law, Heather (Adam) Hooper, Glasgow, MT; grandchildren, Jada Buckman, Julia Buckman, Zac Pittman, Ethan, Alayna and Haylie; great-grandchildren, Zoe, Avianna and Milo; three brothers, Mitch Scheffelmaer, Robert (Candus) Scheffelmaer and Otto (Martha) Scheffelmaer; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Trace A. Smykle, 25, Sioux Falls, formerly Brandon, died Monday, April 12, 2021, unexpectedly at his home.

Visitation with family will be 5-7pm, Friday, April 16, 2021, at Heartland Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be 1:30pm, Saturday, April 17, 2021 at Heartland Funeral Home.

Trace Arthur Smykle was born November 20, 1995, as a twin brother to Ariel, to Troy and Diane (Mortrude) Smykle in Mitchell, SD. He grew up in Chamberlain, SD, until his family moved to Brandon where Trace attended Brandon Valley High School. He was most recently employed at Fry-N-Pan as a cook.

Trace was a free spirit. He loved his friends, family, hunting, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed the mountains. He liked to cook and wanted to backpack across America. He loved books, movies (especially about History and the Vikings) and music. His cat, “Skade” was his best buddy.

Trace fought the disease of addiction since he was 14 years old. Treatment was difficult, but he recently celebrated 7 months of sobriety. Addiction does not discriminate. His family requests that if you need help – please get it. Addiction is not a joke.

Maxine R. Peterson, 78, Sioux Falls, died Sunday, April 11, 2021, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, following a stroke.

Maxine Rae James was born September 16, 1942, in Brookings County, to Max and Bernice (Allstodt) James.  Maxine graduated from Brookings High School. She met Merle Peterson and the couple was married in March of 1960, in Brookings. Because Merle was in meat sales, the couple and their two children, traveled and lived in several locations around South Dakota. Eventually, Sioux Falls was home and Maxine went to work for the Sioux Falls VA as the director of the Canteen and assistant in Food Service.  In 1999, Maxine was flown to Dallas, TX, to be recognized by the United States VA Director for her Dedication to Service, for fifteen years at her position.

Maxine was first and foremost, a loving, caring, and devoted mother and wife to her family.  Holidays with her family were special times for everyone. Whether she was playing Tri-Dominos or watching sports on television, Maxine was enthusiastic.  She loved the Chicago Bears in football and Duke and Gonzaga college basketball and was glued to every game during March Madness. Maxine also had an immense love for her dog, Lucky.

Maxine will be deeply missed by her husband of over sixty years, Merle; two children, Rick (Michelle) Peterson, Sioux Falls, and Kristi (Ryan Putnam) Bassett, Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren, Dalton, Taylor, Drake, McKenzie, Caden, Tara, Jeff, Jaris, and Jordan; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob James; and many nieces, and nephews.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Bernice (Allstodt) James; one son (at birth), Randall; one grandchild, Eric Boyd; and two brothers, Richard and Raymond.
