Evelyn D. Starnes, 71, Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, October 1, 2013, at Sanford USD Medical Center, in Sioux Falls, after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm Monday, October 7, 2013, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon. Visitation will begin at 11:00am. Interment at Hills of Rest will follow.

Evelyn was born on July 5, 1942, in Canton, SD to Hilka Sinning. Grandfather Sinning called Evelyn his little pumpkin and so she had the nick name Punky while growing up. In 1944 Hilka met and married Mike Koval who later adopted Evelyn. Mike and Hilka had two sons, Mike Jr. and Joe. Evelyn was raised and attended school in Sioux Falls. On February 27, 1960, Evelyn married Rod Starnes in Luverne, MN. Rod and Evelyn had 2 children, Roderick (Rick) Starnes Jr. and Deborah Starnes. Rick is married to Kathy and Debbie is deceased. Debbie lost her battle with breast cancer in 1995 but before she passed away Debbie and Joe Dvorak had a son Robbie, who is Evelyn’s pride and joy. Evelyn was proud to be connected with Joe Dvorak and his family and the great job Joe has done raising Robbie as a single parent.

She was employed during her life at Brown Drug, Sunshine on 2nd Ave, Starmark Bargin Center, and The Fish Shop on 10th Street. Evelyn retired and worked part time for elections.

Animals were always a part of Evelyn’s family. Rod had retired when Rick brought them a puppy named Buddy. Buddy grew up to be a big lovable dog who was a true companion for Rod and Evelyn. Buddy was Evelyn’s constant companion until his death in 2012.

Evelyn appreciated her friendships with Harold and Peggy Kobbrek who provided Rod and Evelyn support throughout their marriage. Evelyn felt that the Kobbrek family adopted her and her family. Evelyn valued the friendship that she had with Butch and Joyce Britton. The Starnes, Kobbrek, and the Britton families have a lot of fond memories spending time together fishing, camping, and playing cards. The Kobbrek and Britton families have always been there for the Starnes family. The light of her life was her grandson Robbie. They enjoyed the Green Bay Packers. She also loved doing daily crossword puzzles. Evelyn presided over many family gatherings always making her baked beans. Evelyn also appreciated the support and fellowship of her brothers, Mike and Joe Koval, and Joe’s wife Cathy during her final days. . She will be missed.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Rodrick (Kathy) Starnes Jr., Sioux Falls; a grandson, Robbie Dvorak and Rob’s father, Joe Dvorak, Sioux Falls; 2 brothers, Michael Koval Flandreau, SD, and Joe (Cathy) Koval, Sioux Falls; and sister-in-law, Barbara (Floyd) Hunking, Sioux Falls.

She is preceded in death by her husband Roderick Starnes Sr., a daughter Deborah Starnes, and her parents.

JoAnn M. Keller-Klitzke 72, Brandon, formerly Waseca, MN, died peacefully in her sleep, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at home.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Heartland Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Hackler officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.

JoAnn Marvel Johnson was born August 11, 1941, to Clifford and Marvel (Myre) Johnson in New Richland, MN. She grew up and attended school and graduated from New Richland High School. She married Theodore Keller June 25, 1960. The couple had three children. JoAnn worked at Brown Printing at the same time for over twenty five years. In October of 1984, Theodore passed away. However, in 1986, JoAnn married Robert Klitzke. The couple continued to live in Waseca and later moved to Pipestone and JoAnn worked for F.E.Y. Industries making calendars and other printed supplies. In 2006 Robert also passed away. Finally, in 2008, JoAnn moved to Brandon, SD. She continued working at HyVee in Sioux Falls and for SMG, the concessions at the Arena.

JoAnn loved to cook and bake. Her family loved her bread pudding and rice pudding, liver and onions, scalloped corn and banana cream pies. She loved to bowl and was a loyal Stampede Hockey fan. In her other free times, she might be found at one of the local casinos playing her game or attending a Sherwin Linton concert. JoAnn also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

JoAnn will be missed by her three children: Glenn (fiancée Sara Kopperud) Keller, Owatonna, MN, Julie (Tim Osterkamp) Rosa, Brandon, and Jodi (Don Gohman) Keller, Brandon; three grandchildren: Shawn Rosa, Amy Henkensiefken, and Tanya (fiancée Brian Steinhoff) Rosa; three great-grandchildren: Joselynn Koppen, Brandon & Nicole Steinhoff; and one brother: Cifford (Jody) Johnson, Jr., New Richland, MN.

JoAnn was preceded in death by spouses, Theodore Keller and Robert Klitzke; her parents, and one brother, Clayton Johnson.

Brian W. Thompson, 48, Spring Creek, NV, formerly Brandon, died Saturday, September 28, 2013, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, following a short battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10AM, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Heritage Lutheran Church, Brandon with Pastor Sandy Soye officiating. Visitation will precede the service with family present. Interment will follow at Midway Lutheran Cemetery, rural Flandreau.

Brian was born January 27, 1965, in Brookings, SD, to Wayne and Lois (St. John) Thompson. He was baptized at the First Lutheran Church in Volga, SD, in 1965. Brian was raised and graduated from Vermillion High School in 1983. He attended Dakota State University. He also served in the Army National Guard for 6 years in Brookings, SD, and was given an Honorable Discharge. Brian met Mary Kay Swanz of Kransburg, SD at DSU and they were married on August 8, 1987. The couple lived in Brandon where they started raising their family of five.

Brian worked for LodgeNet in Sioux Falls prior to becoming employed with HSBC. He later became the Vice President of Security and Fraud of all of HSBC Banks and Credit Operations center west of the Mississippi River. In 2010, he became employed by Barrick Gold Company as the Superintendent of its Safety and Security division at Goldstrike Mine, the largest gold mine in North America, at Elko, Nevada.

Brain had a huge love for his family. Spending time with his kids hiking or exploring was one of his favorite pastimes. He was very musical, loved to write deeply moving notes to his family, paid special attention to details, and bravely led his family through snowstorms as well as life to provided comfort in any difficult situation. Brian was a member of the El Raid Shrine in Sioux Falls and was “Dippity Doo” the happy clown, in the Shriner’s Clown Unit. He also belonged to the American Legion in Sioux Falls and the Masons. Brian was a member of Brandon Lutheran Church until they moved to Nevada.

Brian will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary Kay; five children, Matthew, Madison, SD, Samantha, Brittany, Amber, and Erika Thompson all of Spring Creek, NV; his parents, Wayne and Lois Thompson, Colman, SD; two sisters, Katherine (David) Tarrell, Sioux Falls, and Sheri (Doug) Scheerhorn, Hills, MN; mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Swanz, Clear Lake, SD; and many loving nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Brian was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald Swanz.

Garland E. Haselhuhn, 93, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of West Liberty, IA, went to the loving arms of His Lord Jesus, Friday, September 27, 2013 at his home.

Visitation will begin at 5pm, Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, with family present. A Prayer service will begin at 7pm. Funeral services will be 9am, Thursday, October 3, at Hope Community Church, Sioux Falls, with Rev. Mike Gaudet officiating. Burial will be Thursday, October 3, at the North English, IA Cemetery.

Garland was born in Dallas, IA, March 26, 1920, a son of Frank and Inice (Lancaster) Haselhuhn. He was married to Ellen Mae Martin, May 21, 1950.

He was a 1938 graduate of Dallas/Melcher High School, and later attended Central College in Pella, IA. He owned Garland’s Super Value grocery store and Garland Pizza – a place for the youth and families of West Liberty. He later worked as the assistant business manager of the Iowa Security Mental Facility, was a member of the Iowa realtor’s association in Iowa City and worked for the USDA, until the age of 80. Garland loved his family & loved to help people in the community.

Garland served in World War II as an Army officer aboard Liberty ships and was in charge of the cargo these ships held. He helped to found and build Faith Baptist Church in West Liberty, IA, was a member of Bethany Baptist church in Iowa City and later, Hope Community church in Sioux Falls, SD. Garland served in several civic organizations, Lions, American Legion and was a distinguished recipient of the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellow award. He could also be found as a chaperone on many West Liberty Band trips and school dances. Garland also helped to build the West Liberty Community Country Club.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Ellen, two daughters: Marcia (Mike) Gaudet of Sioux Falls and Michelle (Douglas) Young of Overland Park, KS; a son, Jeffrey (Shelly) of Humboldt, IA; a brother Merle of Adel, IA; and seven grandsons: Gavin Gaudet of Sioux Falls, Eric (Beth) Young of Kansas City, MO, Evan (Brianna)Young of Platteville, WI, Jarod of Mason City, IA, Jason, Jesse, and Jonah Haselhuhn of Humboldt, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and two brothers.

Robert L. “Frosty” Frost, 80, Naples, SD, died Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at the V.A. Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be 5-7pm, Friday, September 13, 2013, at the St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Henry, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will begin Saturday, September 14, at 10:30am at St. Henry’s with Fr. Joseph Puthenkulathil officiating. Interment following at St. Henry’s with Full Military Honors.

Robert L. “Frosty” Frost was born September 3, 1933, in Hoven, SD to Nicholas and Catherine (Wirtz) Frost. He was raised and graduated from Hoven High School. He worked on the farm for a while before enlisting in the US Army and went to Korea as a Medic. When Robert returned, he again farmed and helped his brother-in-law with his house moving business. On May 25, 1960, Robert married Louise Doerr in Onida. The couple moved to Watertown for Robert’s new job with Watkins Feed Company. In 1962, they settled in Naples to raise their family of 10 children. Sadly, Louise passed away in 2008 and Robert continued the feed sales until 2010 when health reasons forced him to retire after 50 years.

Robert was a huge fan of all types of sports. He went to high school games, (mostly football and basketball) all over the area. “Frosty” as everyone knew him, also became a legendary coach in the softball world of South Dakota Women’s Fast Pitch. In Hazel, the field is named for him as he led many teams to state tournaments. He also had a passion for gardening and trees. However, Frosty will never be forgotten for his pool playing and card games with anyone. A sign hung in the Hazel cafe reads, “No two Frost boys are allowed to play cards together!” Frosty also loved fishing anywhere. Sometimes he went to the river or otherwise to Lake Nordan or Thompson. Basically anywhere they were biting! Most of all, he was a family man and loved being together with his kids and grandchildren.

Frosty will be missed by his nine children, Mary Phillips, Columbus, NE, Tom (Beth) Frost, Lakeville, MN, Nick Frost, Watertown, Michael (Stacy) Frost, Brandon, David Frost, Bloomington, MN, Ken Frost, Naples, Angela (Steve) Fiore, Norwalk, CT, Kathy George, Brooklyn Park, MN, & Christi Frost, Kearney, NE; twelve grandchildren, Meghan Phillips, Brian Frost, Alex Frost, Kelsey Frost, Hannah Frost, Jacob Frost, Brooke George, Todd Sell, Avery Frost, Olivia Frost, Sophia Frost & John Frost, three siblings, Norbert (Irene) Frost, Oregon, Veronica Vetter, Pierre, and Anna Herman, Aberdeen; and several nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one daughter, Theresa, and seven siblings.

Paul Jackson, 18, Brandon, died unexpectedly, on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 pm Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Heartland Funeral Home, with a short prayer service at 5:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am, Monday, September 9, 2013 at Celebration United Methodist Church in Brandon, South Dakota.

Paul Wayman Jackson was born June 5, 1995 in Watertown, South Dakota. He was raised in Sioux Falls and attended All-City Elementary and Edison Middle School. Paul graduated from Brandon Valley High School in May of 2013. He was enrolled at Mitchell Technical Institute studying Power Line Maintenance and Construction.

Paul was a very active person. He played football, was a member of the Brandon Bass Fishing Club and loved to hunt whenever he could. His greatest passion was hunting and fishing with his dog, “U”. Paul started hunting at the early age of 4. He and his grandfather, Ron, could often be found at Lake Poinsett on the hunt. Paul was a hard worker. He worked at the Izaak Walton League, Brandon Steakhouse, Gann Valley Ranch as a guide and dog trainer, Menards, Oakland Irrigation and most recently at Cabela’s as a Waterfowl Specialist. Paul was very easy going with a huge smile, and he loved people. He would always go the extra mile to help anyone or to visit with any of his customers.

Paul will be deeply missed by his parents, Sindy (Scott) Wiertzema, Brandon and Steve (Carol Anne) Jackson, Sioux Falls; grandparents Ron and Sondra Timmer, Sioux Falls, Barbara Jackson, Sioux Falls, Nancy Wiertzema, Luverne, Minnesota, LuAnn Olson, Sioux Falls; great grandmother, Adeline Moul, Sioux Falls; 5 sibilings, Dave (Katie), Jeff (Mandy), Mark, Kelsey and Tanner; his very special friend Haley Hillestead; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Gary A. Rickel, 66, Brandon, died Friday, August 30, 2013, at the Helping Hands Assisted Living Home in Brandon.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, September 3, 2013, 12:30pm at the Black Hills National Cemetery with full military honors.

Gary Alan Rickel was born February 22, 1947, in Berkley, CA, to Leo and Elna (Bloomer) Rickel. Upon his graduation from high school, Gary joined the Navy and was sent to Viet Nam as a machinist mate. When Gary returned from the service, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD. He lived in the area and worked at different jobs.

Gary loved to work on models; mostly planes and cars. He also tinkered with engineering model projects such as bridges, made from toothpicks. Gary was known to always have Bubble Yum – Bubble Gum and a glass of tea or coffee everywhere he went. He was family to everyone at Helping Hands. He also loved to go shopping with his buddy Clinton. While shopping, Gary would hop on a mobility cart and “cruise” the store.

Gary is survived by one sister, Penny Locken, Gillette, WY; friend, Clinton Johnson, and his friends at Helping Hands.

David E. Kruger, 60, of Winthrop, MN, and formerly George, IA, died Friday, August 23, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Winthrop.

Graveside services for David will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA, with Pastor Leland Paulson officiating.

David Earl Kruger was born November 20, 1952, in Des Moines, IA. He was adopted by his parents, Earl and Erma (Hampton) Kruger and was raised and educated in the George, Iowa area. He later attended a trade school in Sioux City to become a nurse. While in school and at the approximate age of 22, David was in an auto accident that left him paralyzed. He moved to Des Moines for rehabilitation. He then spent some time traveling throughout the United States. He lived in California several years before returning to Hot Springs, SD. Later, David moved to Mountain Lake, MN, and then on to New Ulm before his health required him to move to the Good Samaritan Home in Winthrop.

David was a very artistic person. He built models out of match sticks, tin plaiting, knitting, and clay modeling. He also loved people. He never met a stranger that he didn’t know before they parted ways. He played Santa Clause for several events and even displayed his musical talents by singing or playing piano.

David will be missed by his sisters, Julie (Chris) Bokelman, Sun Valley, NV, and Nancy Lessard of Hooksett, NH; one niece, Angie (Craig) Johnson, George, IA; and two nephews, Mark Korthals, Sioux Center, IA and James E. Lessard of Hampton Beach, NH.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Erma (Hampton) Kruger, one brother, Kent Kruger and one brother-in-law, Gilbert Lessard.

Julie E. Plummer, 53, Brandon, died Thursday, August 15, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00pm, Monday, August 19, 2013, at Heartland Funeral Home, with family present 6-8pm. Celebration of life will begin at 10:30am, Tuesday, August 20, at Brandon Lutheran Church with Pastor Marlin Haugrud officiating. Interment will follow at Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

Julie Ellen Swanson was born May 25, 1960, in Milwaukee, WI, to Jack and Lois Swanson. She was raised in the Edina, Minnesota area and graduated from Edina West H.S. She attended and graduated from Augustana College in 1982 with a BA in Nursing. Julie was a R.N. with Sanford Hospital for over thirty years until her illness caused her to retire. During her nursing career she spent the first six and last five years in the NICU. Julie was a distinguished and honored nurse, but family was her first priority. Any activity or time spent with her family is what she cherished most.

Julie will be deeply missed by her husband, Chuck; daughter, Kelsey Brandon, SD; sons Benjamin (Laura) Plummer, Tea, SD.; AJ (fiancé Ashley) Brandon, SD.; her parents, Jack and Joanna Swanson, Edina, MN; brother, John Swanson, Eden Prairie, MN; sister, Kristin (Jon) Engman, Edina, MN; parent-in-laws, Wayne (Patricia) Plummer, Honey Creek, IA; sister-in-law, Cheryl (Dave) Andrews, Urbandale, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Julie was preceded in death by her mother, Lois Swanson and her mother-in-law, Arlene Plummer.

Patricia A. (McGuinness) Bollinger, 75, of Hartford, SD, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM, Friday, August 2, 2013, at the Kinsley Funeral Chapel in Hartford. Graveside services will be held at 10:00AM, Saturday, August 3, at the Hartford Cemetery of Hartford, SD, with Pastor Chris Gorman officiating.

Patricia Ann McGuinness was born March 24, 1938, in Providence, RI, to William and Catherine (Hackett) McGuinness. She was one of five children and was raised and educated in the Providence area. She graduated from Hope High School and soon after traveled with her sister, Shirley, to San Diego. Eventually she met and married Wayne Dunham and the couple had two children, Valerie and Wayne II. Patsy worked at several jobs involving bookkeeping and clerical skills and also preparing legal documents for a law firm. She also served as the Executive Director of the Mojave Valley United Way for several years. In 1987, Patsy married Ron Bollinger. They resided in Barstow for a while and then wandered back to Mississippi. In 2000, Ron found an occupation in South Dakota and they moved out to Hartford. Patricia soon was working as a lunch lady for Lincoln High School.

Patsy was a very free spirit. She loved animals and was constantly rescuing cats. She also raised several dogs and two pot bellied pigs, Wilbur and Buddy. Patsy once took a cross-county trip on a Harley Davidson from California to Rhode Island to visit her mother via Louisiana, Florida and Georgia, and then back home.

Patricia is survived by her husband, Ron; her children, Valerie (Steve) Bruce, Canton, and Wayne Dunham II, Sioux Falls; step daughters, Lee (Jeff) Gentry, Pope, MS, and Mary Susan (Wayne Jr.) Cobb, Cleveland, MS; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jana, and Sarah Bruce, Meredith, Mary Clay and Maggie Gentry, and Sara Chelsey and Jax Cobb; and two siblings, Dana (Edie) McGuinness of Florida and Shirley (George) Mowreader, Kennewick, WA.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Billy, and one sister, Winifred.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations should be made to the Charles & Gertrude Johnson Educational Scholarship Fund in Patsy’s memory.
