Larry L. Kothe, 84, Sioux Falls, SD, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Lyon Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.

An Open House celebrating Larry’s life will be held at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon, SD, on Saturday, November 9, 2024, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.  There will be a brief gathering near the end of the open house for anyone to share stories or memories with friends and family.  Larry’s burial will be at Our Redeemer Cemetery in Bryant, SD, at a later date.

Larry Lee Kothe was born on May 20, 1940, in Bryant, SD, to Edward and Ida (Steever) Kothe, as the youngest of ten children.  He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bryant.  Larry graduated from Bryant High School in 1959.  He was united in marriage to Judy Meyer, and they had two children, Derek (Kathryn) Kothe and Stephanie (Nervin) Anderson. 

Larry worked in the Maintenance Division of the SD State Highway Department for 37 years. He was an avid deer, pheasant, and turkey hunter, and gun collector.  Larry could often be seen wearing his custom-made cowboy hats, boots and western wear.  He attended many Professional Bull Rider competitions and could often be found dancing it up at the Sioux Falls VFW and American Legion, where he met DiAnn Henley.  Larry and DiAnn were married on September 19, 1988, when Larry also became stepfather to Dana (Shane) Voges and Tony (Julie) Kirchmeier. 

Larry enjoyed working at the Sioux Falls Farm Show.  He continued his passion for hunting by seeking out perfect antiques to share or repurpose. Larry was also quite a craftsman as he created new family memorabilia to pass on down to his grandchildren and great grandchildren.   

Larry is survived by his wife, DiAnn; his children and stepchildren; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Don Walgrave; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Ida; his siblings: Marvel (Mike) Davidson, Darrel (Eileen) Kothe, Alice (Lloyd) Fredrickson, Joyce (Dean) Limoges, Glen Kothe, Beverly Walgrave, Mary Williamson, Charles Kothe, and Doris Harris. 

March 23, 1951 ~ October 10, 2024

James “Jimmy” O. Phillips, 73, Sioux Falls, SD, died Thursday, October 10, 2024, at Avantara Norton Nursing Home in Sioux Falls, after a short battle with cancer.

No Services are scheduled at this time.

James “Jimmy” Owen Phillips was born on March 23, 1951, in Brawley, California, to Thermon and Mozelle (Hanson) Phillips. He grew up and attended schools in Imperial, CA.

He enjoyed water skiing at the lake, fishing with friends, deer hunting in Utah with his father, and hot rodding his old blue and white Oldsmobile 442 around town.

James became a pipefitter/plumber and worked for many years at Ed Blackman & Sons Plumbing of Imperial, CA. After retiring, James moved to Smith River, CA. He enjoyed spending time with friends and always talked about how the weather was perfect year-round there.

James moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in 2019 to be closer to his eldest daughter. While living in Sioux Falls, you could find James in shorts and a T-shirt even when it was -10 degrees outside. He loved to bake cookies and cakes for people around town. His kindness will be truly missed.

James is survived by his daughters, Jamie Phillips and Tracy (Joe) Pulera; grandchildren, Greg (Ashley), Tori, Tim, Samuel, and Ashley F.; a great-granddaughter, Logynn; sister, Sherry Balkcom; brother Tyy (Christine) Phillips; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend/son, “Big A” Adam Klaassen.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Thermon and Mozelle Phillips; brother, Tim Phillips; and soul mate, Linda.

Special thanks to all the caregivers who kept James comfortable throughout his illness.

Joseph F. Hauger, 89, Sioux Falls, SD, died Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Joseph Francis Hauger was born on March 9, 1935, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Henry and Mary (Stark) Hauger. He graduated from Gayville High School in Gayville, SD.

Joseph worked for the Fuller Brush Company as a Salesman and Manager.

Joseph is survived by his children, Gayle Sigler (Kim-Deceased), Rick (Monica) Hauger, Craig (Judy) Hauger, Rhonda (Jerry) VandenHull, Pamela (Ryan) Brinkman, Kelly (John) Kemp, and Todd (Kimberly) Hauger; 7 stepchildren; 15 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 22 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and his sister, Doris Sees, age 100.

Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Hauger; son-in-law, Kim Sigler; grandson, Christopher Brinkman; and mother of his children, Jarlene Hauger.

Dave Deel, 69, Brandon, SD, passed away unexpectedly at his home, on October 6, 2024, at age 69. 

A Private Family Service will be held at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, SD.  

Dave Allan Deel was born on April 13, 1955, in Estherville, IA. He spent his early years in Jackson, MN, graduating from Jackson High School in 1973. He then attended the aviation program in Thief River Falls, MN. 

Dave had a gift for playing guitar and in the early 1980’s, formed with a group of friends, the band JAX, playing good old rock n roll in local bars and venues for several years.   He had a passion for flying small airplanes and spent most of his career in the aviation field, including crop dusting in SW Minnesota with his dad. He later worked at Business Aviation in Sioux Falls, SD, and then as the FBO for the Jackson Municipal Airport until 2012.  He later worked at Last Deck, Inc. in Jackson, MN until his retirement in 2020.  

Dave is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kim (Stehlik) Deel; sons, Andrew Deel, and Brady (Andrea) Deel; granddaughter, Elowen Deel; step-grandchildren, Cooper and Emirae Aurand; parents, Dave and Ginny Deel; siblings, Darwin (Pam), Doug, and Deb (Tom) Pietz; sister-in-law, Lynelle (Rick) Nordquist, brother-in-law, Joel (Mary) Stehlik; and several nieces and nephews.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Stan and Virginia Stehlik; paternal grandparents, Frank and Margeret Deel; and maternal grandparents, Orin and Barbara Anderson.

Betti J. Goldhorn, 69, Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the Sanford USD Medical Center.

Visitation will begin at 3:00pm, Monday, October 7, 2024, at Heartland Funeral Home with a Memorial Service beginning at 4:30pm.

Betti Jean Goldhorn was born on October 5, 1954, in Watertown, SD, to Gordon and Carol (Clark) Goldhorn.  Throughout her life, she lived in several small towns in South Dakota. She finally settled in Sioux Falls.  

Betti enjoyed listening to music and traveling to visit different places in other states. She also loved going to car races with friends and family. Betti enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Family was essential to her, and she loved her animals. She had three children, Jan, Robbie, and Kari. She was also blessed with three grandchildren, Alex, Drea, and Avrie. She loved her grandchildren very much and treasured the time she spent with them.

Betti is survived by her husband, Darrel; two daughters, Jan, and Kari; grandchildren, Alex, Drea, and Avrie; sisters, Donna, and Shawn; along with nieces, nephews, a great-niece, and a great-nephew.

Betti was preceded in death by her son, Robbie; her parents, Gordon and Carol; and several other family members.

Arlyn B. Hamann, 73, Sioux Falls, SD, died Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the VA Medical Center, from a battle with cancer.

Per Arlyn’s wishes, he will be cremated with a Celebration of Life at a later date. Those wishing to celebrate his life are welcome to do so in any way that feels right to them. Arlyn’s family thanks all their friends and family for their love and support.

Arlyn Bruce Hamann was born on January 31, 1951, in Rock Valley, IA to Fritz and Hendrena (Van Der Naald) Hamann. He met his wife, Debbie, in 1982 and they united in marriage in 1985. They spent 39 years together until his passing on Sunday evening.

Arlyn served his country in Vietnam from 1971-1975, on the USS John Hancock and had an honorable discharge. Arlyn was a working-class man. He worked many years at Thermal Company and eventually worked for the City of Sioux Falls, along with various other endeavors.

Arlyn enjoyed many of the simpler things of life. He loved to grill on a regular basis and spend time with his family.

Left to cherish Arlyn are his wife, Debbie, Sioux Falls; his children Joshua (Abigail) Hamann, Sioux Falls, and Robert (Tracy) VerMaas, Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Andrew, Shaun, Zachary, and Maxwell; great-granddaughter, Isabella; siblings, Dale Hamann, Rock Valley, IA, Bill Hamann, Rock Valley, IA, Karl (Linda) Hamann, Portland, OR, Linda (Jerry) Gullickson, Dickinson, ND, and Berdella Hamann, Des Moines, IA.

Dustin A. LaSelle, 52, Sioux Falls, departed for his heavenly home, Monday, September 23, 2024, surrounded by family and friends after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Dustin Alan LaSelle was born October 25, 1971, to Alan K. LaSelle and Vicki L. (Sutter) LaSelle, in Burlington, Colorado.

Dustin is survived by his wife, Sarah; his children, Shawn (Barbie), Collin, Tim, and Ryleigh; his mother, Vicki; his stepfather, Ron; his grandchildren, Eric and Klohe; his aunt, Donna; his sister, Stacey (Mike); his stepsisters, Jackie, Leslie, Heather, and Holly; and his many relatives and friends.

Norbert John Faulstich, 87, Brandon, SD, died Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at the Hidden Valley Assisted Living Home in, Ogden, UT, following health issues.

Inurnment for Norbert will be at the SD State Veteran’s Cemetery, 10:00am, Thursday, October 3, 2024, with Full Military Honors. Norbert John Faulstich was born to Ethel (Dunlap) and Norbert Faulstich on November 8, 1936, in Highmore, SD.  He grew up on a ranch near Holabird, SD, and graduated from Highmore High School.  Norbert went on to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating with a degree in animal husbandry. While at State, he was also a member of Army ROTC and upon graduation, went to Fort Sill for artillery officer training and was commissioned as a 2nd then 1st Lieutenant in the Army. It was during college that Norbert met his future wife, Jane Larson. Lore has it he spotted her working on a float during homecoming week and the rest was history. It must have been all those Nick’s hamburgers they enjoyed together.

After officer training, Norbert was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, for two years. During that time, Jane and Norbert welcomed a daughter, Tammy, to their young family. In 1962, they moved back to the ranch in Highmore and welcomed a second daughter, Heidi, in May of that year.

Norbert spent the first years of his career as a County Agent in Wagner, Lake Andes, and Vermillion, SD. When he accepted a position as sales manager for Farmland Industries/Double Circle Co-op, the family moved to Sioux Falls. Apart from a brief move to Bismarck, ND, with Farmland, South Dakota was home.

Norbert was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. His favorite time of year was fall—weekend mornings sitting in duck blinds and afternoons crunching through cornfields chasing ringneck pheasants. But he especially looked forward to deer season in the Black Hills. The wake-up call at 4:30am was always “got any deer hunters in here”. With smells of a He-man-mountain man breakfast coming from the Ish-Ga-Bibble cabin kitchen.

Because of all the time they spent West River, Norbert and Jane fell in love with the Black Hills. They bought a lot just west of Custer and started to plan their retirement there. Their dream was SEGLITH: Sell Everything and Go Live In The Hills. And they did (except we never believed they “sold everything”!).

Norbert started the Black Hills homestead with a basement apartment where he could live while he built the rest of the house. He also built a garage with a shop for his woodworking, then ANOTHER shop for his woodworking because Jane took over his space with all her dolls and miniatures.

Another legacy Norbert left is the cabin at Lake Norden. Norbert made a deal with Jane’s uncle Vaino to buy some land just north of the Bajuniemi cabin. He poured a foundation and moved a simple little house from a cow pasture onto the lot. Summers were—and continue to be—spent at the lake. He pulled hundreds of skiers out of the water at their signal—‘HIT IT!”

Norbert never let any grass grow under his feet. For him, it was early to bed; early to rise. He spent his retirement helping friends with construction projects and farming. He had an inspiring faith and loved Jesus well.

Those left to miss him include two daughters, Tammy (Bob) Eppens, and Heidi Ode; grandchildren, Ashleigh (Billy) Haas, David (Suzy) Eppens, Tyler (Alesia) Ode, Paul (Kaitlin) Ode, Christian (Claire) Ode, Calvin (Kaitlyn) Ode, Kathryn (Eric) Eigenberg, and Lincoln (Bailey) Ode; great-grandchildren, William and Jane Haas, Eliza and Lily Eppens, Oak and Ivy Ode, Beckett, Beau, Barron and Lena Ode, Thomas, Harvey, and Aurora Ode, and Burton and Sawyer Ode.  

Norbert was preceded in death by his bride of 64 years, Jane; his parents, and one sister and brother-in-law, Linda (Paul) Vergets; and two sons-in-law, Thomas Ode, and Richard Woodside.

Hiroshi Tsuji, 87, Sioux Falls, passed away of natural causes on the morning of September 7, 2024, at the Sioux Falls VA Hospital. 

Hiroshi will be laid to rest 3pm, Thursday, September 12, 2024, at the South Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.

Hiroshi was born August 1, 1937, in Fresno, CA, to Torazo and Suye Tsuji.  He had five other siblings; Hisao “Bill”, Hatsuye “Sue”, Mitsuko “Mitzi”, George, and Minoru “Mino”.

In 1964, Hiroshi married Midori “Joyce” Uehara.  They were blessed with three boys; Troy, Sean, and Trent.  Hiroshi was a great bowler, having accomplished three – 300 games.  He was a huge fan of the Las Vegas Raiders.  He loved being with family and friends.  He will be remembered for his sense of humor, warm heart, and most of all his selflessness with a heart of gold.

Hiroshi is survived by his wife, Joyce, Sioux Falls, SD; Troy (Kim), daughter, Rachel, Sioux Falls, Sean (Darla), children, Ryan, Eryka, and Kiara, Sioux Falls, and Trent, Sioux Falls; Hiroshi is also survived by his brothers, George (Amy), Minoru (Joan), and sister-in-law,  Teri. 

Hiroshi was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.
