July 21, 1936 ~ April 16, 2024

Ronald E. Hubner, 87, Sioux Falls, passed away, peacefully, on April 16, 2024, at his home.

Visitation with family will be 5-7pm, on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Heartland Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be at 10:30am, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at Spirit of Truth Lutheran Church, Brandon (112 E Annabelle St). Burial at the SD Veteran’s Cemetery will follow at 1pm, with Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the SF Humane Society or St. Frances House in Ron’s memory in lieu of flowers.  

Ronald Emanuel Hubner was born July 21, 1936, in Avon, South Dakota to Burnell and Minnie Hubner. He lived in the Avon area until he was 17 years old, at which time he moved to the Brandon area with his parents, brother, Delmer, and sister, Myrna. Ron met his wife-to-be on a blind date. They were married on July 20, 1958. Two girls were born in this union, Ronda, in July 1959, and Renee, in September 1961.

Ron worked for the Brandon Lumber Company until he joined the Armed Services. Upon his return, he worked for Greenley Packing Company and Auto Body Specialties, until his retirement in 2006.

Ron especially liked spending time with all of his family and friends. Ron could be found, most mornings, at Burger King or Hardee’s for their breakfast. Gardening was very important to him. Ron was the hardest-working man one would ever meet. Up until his passing, he spent every spare second working in his garden, researching his next planting season, or making rugs on a loom. He was known for his huge and productive crops. His passion was sharing his produce with friends and neighbors. He always over-planted his garden and would bring boxes of produce to local shelters for everyone to enjoy.

When he wasn’t working, he would spend time at his great-grandchildren’s sporting events or going to dinner with friends.

Ron is survived by his wife, Gail Hubner; his two daughters, Ronda (Greg) Hanson, and Renee Bruggeman; four grandchildren, Heath (Vanessa), Heidi, Casey, and Kiley (Ross); four great-grandchildren, Conner, Owen, McKenzie, and Blake; and his sister, Myrna Ford,

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Del.

Nathan Michael DenHerder, 44, Garretson, SD lost his battle with depression and alcoholism on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at his home in Garretson.

A Celebration of Life will be held 5-7pm, Friday, April 19, 2024, at Heartland Funeral Home, with a short service at 5pm. Nathan Michael DenHerder was born in Luverne, MN, on April 6, 1980, on Easter Sunday to Linda and Tim DenHerder. He was raised in Valley Springs and the surrounding area and graduated from BVHS in 1998. After graduating, Nate worked at Hageman Concrete for several years with his dad, Tim. While working there, he made many lifelong friends; shenanigans and tomfoolery were a big part of their daily tasks. His best friend and hunting partner, Riley went to work with him often. From there, Nathan went to work at JMJ Caseworks for several years, running a CNC machine. Following JMJ Caseworks, he started his career with DeJager Plumbing and Heating, where he was welcomed and appreciated. Nate had recently finished his schooling to become a Journeyman plumber and HVAC tech. He worked with them until his passing.

Everyone knew Nate as the guy with a huge smile that would light up the room. Unfortunately, a big smile can hide a lot. He loved hunting, fishing, racing, and pretty much anything outdoors. Nate loved being involved with his son’s sports activities. He and his boys loved spending time with family at Big Stone Lake in the summertime, where they would have campfires, tubing time, and catch lots of fish. Anything involving the outdoors and drinking, he was all about.

Nate is survived by Sony, Gavin, and Owen; mom, Linda; dad, Tim; sister, Sadie (Keith) DenHerder-Elsberry; grandma, Jean; a host of other relatives, and a special friend, Skip.

Nate was preceded in death by Grandma Charlotte Collier; Grandpa Red, (Lloyd Collier); Grandpa Skeeter, (Kenneth DenHerder), Aunt Tina Weber Collier, and good friend, Owen Swanson.

June 16, 1958 ~ April 10, 2024

Virgil N. Hall, 65, Sioux Falls, died on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Dougherty Hospice in Sioux Falls.

Memorial Services will begin at 11am, Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon. Inurnment will immediately follow at East Side Cemetery, Steen, MN, at 12:30 pm. A Visitation with Family Present will resume at Heartland Funeral Home after the burial.

Virgil Newton Hall was born on June 16, 1958, in Huron, SD, to Ernest and Dorothy (Freed) Hall. Virgil graduated from high school in 1978. Virgil worked for Comprehensive Systems in Charles City, Iowa, and then McDonald’s for five years, before moving to Sioux Falls in 1995. He worked at the Minnehaha County Courthouse and Sanford, through Dakotabilities.

Virg enjoyed going to car races, and NASCAR races, and had a love for horses at Horsepower (HandiRiders.) He enjoyed socializing with friends and family. As a teenager, Virgil raised Susie, a buffalo, Sam, a Holstein calf, Arnold the pig, and Tony the llama. He was also able to enjoy a couple of helicopter rides.

Virg will be deeply missed by his two sisters, Karen (Tom) Niichel, Osage, IA, and Gloria Dammer, Inwood, IA; his brother, Leon (Jenn Brau) Hall, Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Dorothy Hall; two sisters, Louise Hall and Doris Hall; two brothers, Doug Hall and Wayne Hall; and a brother-in-law, Dave Dammer.

September 3, 1944 ~ April 2, 2024

   Barbara A. (Ren) Walker, 79, Sioux Falls, passed away quietly in her sleep on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, after a prolonged illness.

   No services are planned at this time.

   Barbara Ann Ren was born on September 3, 1944, in Providence, RI, and lived in La Porte, Indiana, before moving with her family to Southern California after World War II.

   Barb married Melvin Walker in 1963 and together they raised 4 children. Barbara loved going to the beach at sunrise with her children and then taking them to breakfast before dropping them off at school. Each summer, she would take the kids to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and other fun destinations. She worked in the customer service industry for many years before moving to Texas in 2002, and then to Sioux Falls that same year.

   Barbara loved spending time with her whole family, especially her children and grandchildren as she held them close to her. Barb will be truly missed by all but is in Heaven’s arms now.

   Barb is survived by her four children, Scott (Michelle) Walker, Sheridan Walker, Wendi (James) McInnes, and Rachelle (John) Choske; 19 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

   Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Wendell and Irene; sister, Alene Frank; granddaughter, Cassandra McInnes; and grandson, James Thomas McInnes III.

David Pruden, Jr., 53, Sioux Falls, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at his home.

Visitation with Family present will begin at 1 PM, Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, with the Funeral Service beginning at 2 PM. Military Honors will follow.

David William Pruden, Jr. was born on December 21, 1970, in St. Paul, MN, to David W. and Evelyn (Kreul) Pruden Sr.

Upon graduation from school, David served our country as a gunner in the Navy. He was known for helping Taiwanese refugees and his time in the Persian Gulf War.

Dave met his wife, Tammy Jo, in the Twin Cities and were married in August 2011.

David is survived by his mother, Evelyn Pruden; three children, DJ, Brandi, and Emily; three step-children, Nick, Kristina (David), and Katie (Jared); three grandchildren, Nora, Maria, and Miles; siblings, aunts, uncles, and friends; and loved by his first wife, Teri.

Phyllis I. Swanson, age 92, of Brandon, SD, passed away on March 13, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Village, in Sioux Falls, SD.

There will be a Funeral Mass at Risen Savior Catholic Church in Brandon, SD, on Monday, April 8, 2024, at 11am. Visitation will begin at 10am.  Inurnment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Sioux Falls, SD.

Phyllis Irene Muilenburg was born in Bancroft, SD, on February 1, 1932, to parents “John” Leland and Emma (Collison) Muilenburg. She was united in marriage to Roy A. Swanson Jr. on May 27, 1950. in Huron SD.

Dalyce G. Clow, 92, Brandon, SD, died Monday, March 18, 2024, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, after recent health issues.

Dalyce Geraldine Carlson was born on May 29, 1931, in Lancaster, MN to Anna and Frank Carlson. She married Wilbert Clow on October 23, 1948, in Hallock, MN. They moved to South Dakota and resided in Brandon for over 65 years.

She was a charter member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and a very active member of Beaver Valley Lutheran Church.

Motherhood, homemaking, daycare, and sewing became her passion. The entire community knew her as Grandma Clow or the sewing lady. She took on many sewing projects over the years including the choir robes, confirmation robes, and communion linen for the church.          

Grateful for having shared Dalyce’s life are her sons, Richmond (Carolyn), Jeffrey (Deb), Brian (Ann), David, and Daniel (Tamie); daughter, Pamela; grandchildren, Catherine (David), Nicholas (Mary), Joshua (Teddie) Tanner, Jeremy, Ethan, Kyle, and Jacob; great-grandsons, Jayden and Jaxson; great-granddaughter, Isabella; brother, Arnold; and many nieces and nephews.

Dalyce was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert; her parents; grandson, Travis; brothers, Harvey and Arthur; and sisters, Thelma and Doris.

Harley Waagmeester Jr. passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 66.

Harley Lee Waagmeester Jr. was born August 9, 1957, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Harley Lee and Ruth (Mc Gloghlon) Waagmeester Sr. He attended Washington Senior High School and went on to study electronics at DeVry Institute in Arizona. He enjoyed tinkering with all kinds of electronics, playing his guitar, and had a ham radio hobby. Harley liked to travel, living in Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and then finally coming back home to Sioux Falls.

Harley is survived by his sisters, Debra (Russell) Kooistra, Hills, MN, Barbara (Ken) Murdock, Maple Valley, WA; brother, Gary Waagmeester, Brandon, SD; nephew, Zachariah Verdoorn, Chicago, IL; and great-nephews, Rhett and River Hennings, Wilmont, MN; nieces, Shelby Kooistra, Wilmont, MN, and Chelsea Kooistra, Sioux Falls, SD, and  Alexa Murdock, Maple Valley, WA; and great-niece, Ridley Hennings, Wilmont, MN.

Harley is preceded in death by his father, Harley Lee Waagmeester Sr., and mother, Ruth Marie (McGloghlon) Waagmeester.

December 26, 1958 ~ March 11, 2024

Debra “Debbie” Lea Jensen, 65, Harrisburg, passed peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2024, after a short battle with lung cancer, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place later this Spring.  Please check back for more updates as they are scheduled.

Debbie was born December 26, 1958, in Hawarden, IA, to Bruce and Joyce (Skinner) Jensen. She was raised in Alcester, SD, with her three sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Alcester High School in 1977 and remained in Alcester for the majority of her life. Debbie gave birth to her son, Jacob, on October 2, 1987. She spent her working life in service to others, as a grocery store assistant manager, a special education paraprofessional, a CNA/Med Aid, an assembly line worker, a caretaker, and a housekeeper. She moved to Iowa to help take care of her first grandson, and a couple of years later, moved to Harrisburg to continue to be close to her son and grandkids.

Debbie loved her dogs, Muffie, Cole, Bear, Marvin, and then Bella. She enjoyed fishing, reading, and traveling to visit family. She spent time with her grandsons every weekend and loved bringing them a sack lunch and snacks.

Debbie trusted in the Lord and repeated that she was “in God’s hands” throughout her cancer journey.

Debbie is survived by her son, Jacob (Lauren) Jensen; grandsons, Eli and Dawson; siblings, Millie (Greg) Klopstad, Patti (Matt) Williams, and Walter (Rebecca) Jensen; and brother-in-law, John Whitehead.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, Bruce and Joyce Jensen; nephew, SPC Dennis G. Jensen; sister, Judy Whitehead; and brother, Glenn Jensen.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brent Deckert on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Sanford USD Medical Center, in Sioux Falls.

Brent Deckert was born March 2, 1969 in Wadena, MN. He grew up in Henning, MN with his sister Stacy and his brother Brian.  His parents, Herman and Arlene Deckert, owned a grocery store for 36 years. As a way to avoid working in the store, Brent would sneak off to the gym to shoot hoops with his buddies. He always knew he wanted to be a basketball coach when he grew up. He went on to graduate from Henning High School in 1987 and then Moorhead State University in 1992 with a degree in education along with a coaching minor. 

Brent began teaching in Sioux Falls in 1993 and his first stints as a coach were at Sioux Falls Washington and then Augustana College before ending up at Brandon Valley in 2000.  His love for coaching the Lynx was evident to anyone who chatted with him. His passion for the game was year-round, there was never an off-season, and the gym was always open. Springs and summers included camps, workouts, tournaments, team trips, and piles and piles of Lynx t-shirts. It was rare to see Brent wearing something that didn’t say Lynx Basketball.

Brent and Jill met at a summer basketball camp in Yankton, SD where they coached opposing high school teams. It was competition at first sight. They were married in 1996 and they had 3 children: Caden, Jaksen, and Kennedi. Countless hours were spent in the gym as the kids grew up and they all shared his love of basketball. It was very special for him to coach Caden and Jaksen through their varsity careers and he did his very best to ‘sideline’ coach Kennedi through her final season. Without a doubt, it could be argued the highlight of his coaching career was winning the state championship in 2019. But Brent always said the best part for him as a coach was the time he spent with the kids. He loved the practices, film sessions, and giving away Subway cards for half-court makes. Sure, winning was important (family game night never ended well at the Deckert house) but he was less concerned about the wins and losses and always more focused on the relationship he had with his players. Brent coached the Lynx for 21 years before retiring in 2021, one year after his cancer diagnosis.

Brent passed away on March 13, 2024, eleven days after he officially retired from teaching. If we have to say he lost his battle with cancer after almost 4 years, then we must say it was a triple overtime game with bench-clearing brawls and several technical fouls. He fought until his very last breath, or until the final horn sounded. We are forever inspired by his resilience, his tenacity, and his refusal to give up. We have witnessed first-hand how The Game Honors Toughness.

Our hearts are broken, but we know his spirit and his legacy will live on.

He is preceded in death by his mother Arlene Deckert. Much of his family lives in Fargo including his dad, Herman; and his sister, Stacy, along with her husband, Mat; and their children, Taylor, Jonas, and Kasen. His brother Brian, also lives in Fargo with his children Derek, Davina, Jess, Blaise, and Kurt.

Brent spent countless hours watching game films and discussing basketball with his in-laws, Ron and Gloria Riherd. In many ways, they became parents to him and we are eternally grateful for their love and support. Brent also shared his life with his sister-in-law, Jody Riherd, and her husband, Dennis Corcoran, along with their children, Elliott and Reece, of LaCrosse, WI.
