Phil was born in Garretson, SD, on August 27, 1935, to Oscar and Jennie (Olsen) Lundquist and graduated from high school in 1953. After attending college at Sioux Falls College, Phil enlisted in the US Navy, where he served for two years. In 1960, he graduated from SDSU with a degree in Zoology. After teaching high school biology for two years in Hartford, SD, Phil began optometry school at Indiana University and graduated in 1965. In 1960, he married Sally Knight, who died unexpectedly in 1968. Phil married Audrey Schulte on July 19, 1969.

For over 40 years, Phil practiced optometry in Sioux Falls. He loved his career and working with all of his patients. Phil was active with the VOSH organization, providing free eye exams and glasses in Mexico. Over the years, he and Audrey made 15 trips to Mexico and met many new friends.

Phil enjoyed singing with barbershop choruses, playing golf, and participating at Central Baptist Church with their music and drama programs. In 1990, Phil was named “Barbershopper” of the Year. From the Lions Club, Phil received the following awards: Robert L. Tyler Award, Melvin Jones Fellow, and Lions International Relations.

Phil’s smile will be missed by his family and all of his many friends. Phil’s greatest joy in life was enjoying his grandkids.

Phil leaves behind his wife, Audrey; two daughters: Stephanie (Mark) Michel, Jackson, WY, and Sheleen (Lonny) Bauer, Harrisburg, SD; and three grandchildren: Harrison Philip, (who was born on Phil’s 69th birthday), Gabriel Louis and Elsa Mathilda, all of Harrisburg, SD.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Jennie Lundquist, and his brother, Marv Lundquist.

The family has established a memorial in Phil’s honor.

I remember when Phil joined the Babershoppers chorus. We had many good times years ago and it was hard for me to leave the group back in the early 1980’s because of so many friendships in the chorus. Phil had a special smile and warmth that will be missed. Our condolances to the family. Chuck & Joan Vasgaard

My condolences to the family and close friends of Mr. Lundquist. Look forward to the time promised when we can welcome back our loved ones from the sleep that only our heavenly Father can awaken them from. (John 5:28,29) God’s Word gives us the sure hope of the resurrection, of being raised to life once again. (Acts 24:15; Daniel 12:2) It is my hope that these verses will help console each of you and give you peace.
