Elaine Olive (Dierks) Haberman, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died peacefully Monday, April 17, 2017, at the Bethany Home, in Brandon, surrounded by her family.

Visitation will be 5-7pm, Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Brandon Lutheran Church, Brandon, SD. Funeral Services will be 11:00am, Friday, April 21, 2017, also at Brandon Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at the Worthington Memorial Gardens.

Elaine, daughter of George and Emma (Knigge) Dierks, was born on the family farm southwest of Fulda, MN on May 7, 1932. She was baptized as an infant and then confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1946. Elaine attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School for her elementary years and graduated from Fulda High School in 1950. She was employed by Lebben’s Grocery part-time during her school years and then Credit Records in Worthington, MN after graduation.

She was engaged to Ferd Haberman in 1951, a short time before he was inducted into the United States Air Force. Ferd and Elaine were united in marriage on July 5, 1953 while he was home on military leave. Their first home was on Turner Air Force Base in Albany, GA.

Their son, Irvin, was born in March 1955 at the base hospital. After Ferd was discharged in 1956, they returned to Fulda, MN where they made their home and lived for 10 years. Their oldest daughter, Sharon, was born in October 1964. They moved to Heron Lake, MN in 1967 where their youngest child, Kristine, was born in February 1970. They moved to Brandon, SD in February 1976.

Elaine was a stay at home mom while the children were young. Her career included working as an administrative assistant at Occidental Fertilizer Company in Heron Lake, MN as well as Hills of Rest and Eastside Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Elaine’s last job was as a legal secretary at Abbott and Abbott Law Offices in Brandon, SD for 26 years before retiring in 2006.

Throughout her life, Elaine was active in church, enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, playing cards and fishing. Along with her husband and children, her greatest love in life was her grandchildren. Elaine will be remembered for her love and devotion to family and kindness to all she encountered.

Elaine will be deeply missed by her husband, Ferd; three children, Irvin Haberman, Sioux Falls, Sharon Johansen, Brandon, and Kris (Jeff) Tietz, New Prague, MN; three grandchildren, Ava, Audrey, and Cooper; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elaine is preceded in death by her parents; one son-in-law, Robert (BJ) Johanson; and five siblings, Arnold (Ruth) Dierks, Renata (Robert) Christenson, Irene (Fred) Boehnke, Erna (Norman) Breit, and Raymond (Bernice) Dierks.

Lena Joan Madison 74, Brandon, died Friday, April 14, 2017, at the Sanford USD Medical Center, in Sioux Falls.

A Celebration of Life with family will be 2-4pm, Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Heartland Funeral Home.  A private burial will take place at a later time.

Lena Joan Schiebout was born April 10, 1943, to Henry and Bertha (Davelaar) Schiebout, on a farm near Sioux Center, IA. She attended school at and graduated from Edgerton High School. She attended nursing training in Rochester, MN and worked at Luverne Community Hospital for 34 years. She married Charles Madison in 1964. They lived in Columbus, NE in their early marriage and then made their home in Luverne, MN before moving to Brandon, SD in 1994. She saved a person from drowning after graduation from high school and received a Red Cross Award for her bravery.

Lena loved family. She spent much of her time traveling to see her grandchildren and children and hosting family gatherings. She also enjoyed traveling with Charles on business trips around the USA in her working years. She played fast pitch softball for the IBP team. She and Charles enjoyed winters in Arizona after retiring. She had lifelong friends to walk, talk and shop with and showed much kindness to people and animals.

Lena will be deeply missed by her husband, Charles; two children, Thomas (Jill) Madison, Kansas City, MO, and Tamara Rowden, Ft. Collins, CO; two grandchildren, Savannah and Samuel Rowden; four siblings, John (Barb) Schiebout, Edgerton, MN, Cora (Harold) Vander Ziel, Sioux Falls, Beth (Jerry) Wieman, Luverne, MN, and Helen (Haru) Takeda, Los Alamos, NM; and one sister-in-law, Henrietta Schiebout, Milaca, MN.; and several nieces and nephews.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Chris Schiebout.

Robert (Bob) Cournoyer 70, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away peacefully at his home, after a battle with COPD, on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Robert’s wishes are to be buried with his wife Connie, in a combined Celebration of Life. Graveside services will be held at Bluffview Cemetery, in Vermillion SD, on Saturday, June 10, 2017, at 11am.

Bob will be greatly missed by his 7 children, Keith (Timi) Jongeward, Sierra Vista, AZ, Doyle Jongeward, Jr., Lennox, SD, Robert (Becky) Jongeward, Sierra Vista, AZ, Wendy (Adam Schwietzer) Jongeward, Sioux Falls, SD, Robert (Jody Hewson) Cournoyer Jr., Amidon, ND, Ryan Broderick, CA, and Cheryl Cournoyer, Flagstaff, AZ; 14 grandchildren, Christina, Brandon, Timothy, Brittney, Amanda, Morgan, Mason, Dustin, Derrick, Rachel, Hannah, Olivia, Alexis and Madison; 2 siblings, Ella Rae and Richard.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Peter Joseph and Amy Cournoyer; his wife, Connie J. Cournoyer; three siblings, Patricia, Deanna, and Judith; and one grandson, Keith Jongeward Jr.

Alice Daisy (Poile) Durham, 66, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 7, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Memorial Service will be held in her honor, at the Pierre American Legion, 1PM, on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Alice was the second child, born of Walter Poile, Sr. and Cleo (Burger) Poile. She was born December 12, 1950, in Gettysburg, SD, at the home of her paternal Grandparents. Alice moved with her family to Pierre, SD, at the age of 2 and made it her home for most of her life. She married Henry (Tuck) Durham in 1969, and the couple had three daughters. Later, Alice had a 4th daughter on her own. She worked at several different restaurants and lounges in Pierre and was a loyal and hard worker and loved managing businesses. Alice treated her employees as friends; many of Alice’s lifelong friends were also coworkers.

Alice was an amazing woman cherished and loved by many family members, coworkers and friends. She will always be remembered for her infectious laugh, big beautiful smile, her loving and giving nature and her ability, even at 4’10”, to command attention and be in charge. She loved crossword puzzles, to read books and watch TV series’ like CSI, but her first and greatest love was for each and every one of her family members.

Alice is survived by her mother, Cleo Poile, Pierre, SD; four daughters: Tammy Ragels, Ft. Pierre, SD, Samantha Durham, Harvey, ND, Pamela Brewer, Sioux Falls, SD, and Kammy Durham, Blackhawk, SD; 4 brothers: Gene, North Platte, NE, Michael, Canyonville, OR, Ed, Pierre, SD, and Tim, Rugby, ND; 3 sisters: Carol (Mick) Ballweg, Pierre, SD, Cindy (Ron) Maszk, Pierre, SD, and LeAnn Poile (Wade), Sioux Falls, SD; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alice was preceded in death by her father, Walter Poile, Sr.; and sisters-in-law, Pamela Poile and Jane Poile.

Celene Wickstrom, 80, Brandon, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at Bethany Home in Brandon.

Memorial services will be 5pm, Saturday, April 8, 2017, at Heartland Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 4pm. Inurnment will follow in the Brooklyn Evangelical Free Cemetery near Beresford, SD.

Margo Celene Bernard was born May 5, 1936, in Sioux City, IA, to Clifford and Margaret (Hendrix) Bernard. She grew up on a farm east of Vermillion and graduated from Elk Point High School in 1954. Celene married John A. Wickstrom on October 3, 1954, in Elk Point. The couple farmed near Beresford before they moved to Sioux Falls in 1966 where they raised their three children; Bruce, Daniel, and Nils.

In 1981, Celene earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art from Augustana Collage. She loved to draw and paint, was an avid reader of many novels and the Harry Potter series, and enjoyed going to movies. Celene spent many hours gardening “roses” and cuddling her cat, Tess. She also was a member of Hilltop United Methodist Church and participated in the Shawl Ministry.

Celene will be deeply missed by her children, Daniel (Annette), Cary, N.C., and Nils (Joy), Brandon, SD; three granddaughters, Arissa, Amber, and Lacy Wickstrom.

Celene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two children: infant daughter, Dina and son, Bruce; and one sister, Sally Jean Bernard.

All are thankful for sharing Celene’s life and will cherish her memory. A kind and loving soul has entered Heaven. A special thanks to the caretakers at Bethany Home, Brandon, and her special friends from her drawing group.

Ernest “Bud” R. Johnson 91, Brandon, died Friday, March 31, 2017, at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center.

Memorial services will be 11:00AM, Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Heartland Funeral Home, with full military honors. Inurnment will be 2:00PM, Friday, at the Black Hills National Cemetery.

Ernest Roy Johnson was born February 23, 1926, to Roy and Pansy (Rapenberg) Johnson, in Russell MN. He attended school there until the 9th grade. On February, 27, 1945, Bud enlisted in the Navy and served until November 1946. He returned to Eagle Butte where he worked as a truck driver, farmed, and managed the Co-op for several years. Bud also lived in Sioux Falls, Trent, and finally Brandon, SD.

Bud was a man with many hobbies. He enjoyed fishing, reading, watching old western movies, playing cards and working on puzzles. He loved to buy old cars and resell them. He also had a sharp memory and could recall stories from way back; even up until the very end. Bud was a member of the American Legion of Watertown.

Bud will be deeply missed by his six children, Barb Hinzman, Brandon, SD, Randy (Alyce) Johnson, Wellington, TX, Betty (Kreg) Warrick, Rapid City, SD, Rick (Jackie) Johnson, Wellington, TX, Diane (Tom) Gesinger, Ridgeview, SD, and Janelle (Kurt) Kolb, Leola, SD; sixteen grandchildren, thirty five great-grandchildren, and one sister-in-law, Annette Johnson, St. Cloud, MN.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Palmer Braaten; an infant brother; a great-grandson, Wyatt Joseph Gesinger; special aunt and uncle, Elmer and Tillie Johnson; and son-in-law, Jerry Hinzman.
