Bonnie Lee Nelson

June 28, 1942 ~ October 11, 1923

A Memorial Service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. with a visitation scheduled from 9:30-10:30 a.m and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) South Dakota in honor of Bonnie.

Bonnie Lee Hess was born in 1942 and grew up on families farm outside of Dell Rapids, SD. Bonnie’s heart was forever tied to her “farm home”. Growing up amidst the peaceful serenity of nature, she nurtured a deep love for the outdoors that would stay with her throughout her life.

As fate would have it, Bonnie attended a Valentine’s Day and met John Nelson. He would ask her to marry him on their third date, but it did not become official until 1965. With stars in their eyes and dreams in their hearts, Bonnie and John embarked on a full and adventurous journey together. Their love story spanned over five glorious decades, brimming with laughter, endless exploration, and unwavering devotion. Their unbreakable bond was tragically severed in 2021 when John ran out of bonus time, leaving Bonnie’s heart forever touched by his enduring love.

Bonnie graduated from Augustana College in 1964. She quickly found her passion in helping others. She had always wanted a “people orientated career” and social work did not disappoint.  For the next 40 years, she tirelessly advocated for those who needed someone in their corner. She worked in special education, as a coordinator for Meals on Wheels, she spent time working for Minnehaha County as a representative payee, and ended her career as a targeted case manager with 5th Street Connection. She made a difference in so many lives. Her dedication and empathetic voice gave hope to countless souls, illuminating paths that previously seemed impassable. She was a fierce warrior in her own right, shining light where darkness threatened to prevail.

Bonnie and John became the proud parents to their daughter, Sara. In 1979, they officially adopted her and brought her into their loving home. Bonnie’s determination and unwavering love shaped Sara’s life for the better, and their bond remains unbreakable to this day.

But Bonnie’s vibrant spirit did not end with her noble work. Sports brought her tremendous joy and animated her evenings and weekends with exuberant cheers aimed at the TV. Her favorite teams, the Minnesota Vikings and the UCONN Huskies Women’s Basketball team, captivated her heart and ignited her passion for the game.

After retirement, Bonnie and John embarked on a new adventure, traversing the open road in their trusty camper. Together, they explored the beauty of the world, creating indelible memories at every turn. One of Bonnie’s most treasured voyages was returning to Germany, almost half of a century after she and John had been stationed in Bad Kreuznach. The flood of memories and nostalgia intertwined with her love for exploration, forging a lasting imprint on her soul.

While John was undoubtedly the love of her life and Sara held a special place in her heart, it was her grandson, James who illuminated Bonnie’s world with sheer joy. His infectious laughter and playful spirit brought endless smiles to her face, and she cherished every precious moment they shared.

Bonnie passed away peacefully with her beloved dog Geno by her side on October 11, 2023. Today, as we bid farewell to our dearly loved Bonnie, let us celebrate the remarkable chapters she wrote in the book of life. Her time on this earth was filled with love, adventure, selflessness, and unwavering dedication. Her laughter will forever echo through the hallways of our hearts, reminding us to embrace each day with open arms and a sense of joy.

Bonnie, your spirit will forever dance in the fields of our memories. May you find eternal peace in the embrace of your beloved John, basking in the eternal sunshine of love.

Rest in love, Bonnie.

Brittany Mae Janish

How does one announce the passing of a loving, vibrant, young woman taken from us all too soon?

Throughout Brittany’s life, she had a beautiful soul with a smile that could light up the world. She was positive and kind and desired to help others, no matter what battles she was fighting herself.  If you met Brittany, you could not help but love her wholeheartedly.

Brittany LOVED.  She was a daughter, a sister, an Auntie, and a cat mom, to one very spoiled cat (Mocha).  She was her dad and mom’s “Brittany Mayhoo” and came into this world with a fire in her soul and grace in her heart.  She adored her brother and sisters straight down to her bones and had an unmatched bond with her nieces and nephews.  When asked to describe Brittany, her family said she was dedicated, energetic, passionate, bright, organized, funny, sweet, observant, loving, happy, generous, colorful, and the biggest cheerleader to us all.

Brittany was preceded in death by her grandparents, George and Etta Janish, and Delbert and Naomi McMillan; her brother, David, her aunt, Julie; and her nieces, Haryper and Amelya.

Brittany will be deeply missed by her father, John; her mother, Pearl; her sisters, Jeannie (Clint), Ashley (Jordan), Crystal (Trejon), and Catherine; her twin brother, Brian (Jordyn); her nephews, Daelyn, Peyton, Graysen, and Baylor; her nieces, Alyna, Taryn, Hadley, Ava, and Evadyna; and a multitude of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Her impact has been engraved in our hearts; and while we know that we can no longer see her, she will be shopping right next to us, helping us pick out the perfect shade of rose gold; she will be right next to us celebrating our milestones for generations to come; and she will be right next to us with her own perfect seat in the bleachers, cheering us all on until we meet again.

When the family moved to Fargo, Barbara continued her nursing career at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital for a decade.

Jeffrey Dean Hamer was born February 20, 1966, to Herbert & Donna (Hoff) Hamer in Hendricks, Minnesota. On June 21, 1986, he was united in marriage with Darla Pearson.  Jeff attended Alexandria Vo-Tech where he went to school to be a law enforcement officer, later joining the Nebraska State Patrol. Together they raised three children whom he adored greatly: Hope, Ashley, and Alexander.

Jeff truly enjoyed life and believed it was all about family and showing care for others. He was a kind and gentle person who loved spending time with his family and friends.  His philosophy through life was to not dwell on negativity but to keep life simple and enjoy everything while he could. He had various roles in his life as a mechanic working on trucks, Nebraska State Trooper, and most recently, sales at Billion Automotive.  Jeff loved to tinker and spend time fixing up anything that he could. He was our favorite fix-it man helping any of us with anything we needed. He was teaching Bristol all his tricks over the last 2 years as they spent time together each day.  He and Darla bought a lake lot back in Hendricks where they loved to relax and spend time with friends and family. He would fish, and take the kids and grandkids swimming and boating, and Emma spent many days at the camper with just Grandpa and Grandma as his right-hand girl.  Jeff was so proud of his trees at the lake, he clipped branches from Lance & Ashley’s trees and he said they were the fastest-growing trees known to man everyone laughed when he told them this, but by gosh they grew so fast and everyone was amazed.  He recently was able to make a trip to the lake to see his trees since they had been planted and he was amazed at how big they were. Those things grew 20 feet in a year.  Jeff also loved to garden and he recently taught Alex how to garden. They grew one throughout the winter, which Alex continued to work on and they worked on right up until his final days. Ryder Dean loved Papa’s garden just as much and would always bring him anything and everything he could from the garden. He also spent many mornings at Blaine’s, the local gas station with Bristol drinking coffee and enjoying those he met and sitting outdoors just soaking up the peacefulness.  NASCAR was one of his favorite things and each year he, Darla & Rayleigh would go to a new race track.  Talya loved to tell Papa jokes and they would joke back and forth their latest was “Guess What? Picklebutt.”  He was a man of many things but most of all a family man. He was always making it a point to attend any family function and never miss anything going on.  His wife, children, and grandchildren were the light of his life and everyone who knew him could see that.  Jeff was a friend to many and loved by all he met no matter who you were he always made you feel welcome.  Just like everything Jeff did, he made sure that he got what he wanted his wishes were honored and he was able to pass peacefully at home surrounded by his immediate family.

Jeff will be deeply missed by his wife of 37 years Darla Hamer; daughters, Hope (Dusty) Stultz, Brandon, Ashley (Lance) Richter, Renner; son, Alexander (Taylor Freeman), Brandon; five grandchildren, Rayleigh, Emma, Bristol, Talya, and Ryder Dean; mother Donna (Hamer) Thurow, Brandon; brother, Herbert Jr (Kathy) Hamer, Brandon; his two beloved dogs, Remi and Chaz; along with nieces and nephews, and an abundance of family and friends.

Jeff is preceded in death by his dad, Herbert Hamer Sr.; brothers, Joel and Timothy; father-in-law, Kenneth Pearson; and step-dad, Eldon Thurow.

Daniel Alan Stasica – Aka Dan Farris

August 17, 1956 ~ September 18, 2023

On September 18, 2023, the world said goodbye to a remarkable man, Daniel Alan Stasica, known to many as Dan Farris, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, SD, after a valiant battle with cancer.

A public Celebration of Life will be 6pm, Saturday, October 14, 2023, at the SD Military Heritage Alliance (1600 W Russell St. Sioux Falls).

Born on August 17, 1955, in Minneapolis, MN, Dan was a larger-than-life personality, blending charisma with humor in a way that endeared him to all who knew him.

Dan was a blend of many worlds – a jokester with a contagious laugh, a pillar in the community with his larger-than-life presence, and a cherished public figure. Yet, for all the roles he played in public, it was in private where his depth truly shone. Recognizing that life’s essence lies in the relationships we build, he was a dedicated father, brother, son, and friend.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories for his daughter, Sadie Hayes Ragans of Tallahassee, FL; son, Luke Anthony Stasica of Portland, OR; brothers Bradley Stasica, of Rogers, MN, and Randy Stasica, of Brooklyn Center, MN; and grandchildren, Henry Lee Ragans and Eleanor Ann Ragans, of Tallahassee, FL.

Dan’s spirit will continue to be celebrated by all those who loved him, including his many devoted friends who were by his side until the very end.

Though the world is a bit dimmer without his spirit, we celebrate the richness of a life well-lived.

Tribute to Dan by Trav Jacobs

With Black & Mild smoke in the air, we talked about how long we thought people remember you after you’re gone. Knowing his time here was nearing the end Dan Farris said “ I hate to put this on you T-Dog but I’d like you to write some kind of Eulogy thing to let people know when I’m gone” He called me T-Dog and also christened me with the nickname Love Shack.  I called him DanielSon and I’ve admired his genius, quickness, and talent since I was a kid. Dan, in his words, loved “how beautiful and nasty” his jet-black Ford Mustangs were. I went home and wrote him this poem. I hated knowing the day would come soon that I would have to post it. Today is that day.

If a black Mustang was a man
That would be my friend Dan
Sleek & Seen
Loud
Sharp
Fast
Quick
Every interaction memorable
Not afraid to leave an impression or tire marks
All rules and regulations are optional
And a laugh that always roared like a Ford
There’s nothing more honest on the earth than a man that says everything
There’s no guessing where they stand
You always knew that about Dan
No sugar coating, teeter-tottering or softening
Always shooting straight from the mind, heart, and hip
A courageous and honorable way to live
Living from the heart
When we leave this planet, and we all will
I’m not sure how many years they remember our names
But I am sure of a couple of things
Laughter lives on
Love lives on
These things echo endlessly around the world through the people we loved and laughed with
It carries on forever
If you know Dan then you know how he loves his family more than anything on this earth
You also know his talent is out of this world
He probably gave you at least one nickname
And you always knew he was in your corner whenever you needed him
Life is hard, and brutal at times
It can change a person in a lot of ways
It can wear down the spirit and erode away the desire to keep going through the pain
Viktor Frankel said “Humor is one of the soul’s greatest weapons”
God gifted Dan with a warehouse full of weaponry and Dan used every single bullet
Dan is undefeated in this arena
Like a boxer that went 15 championship rounds in the ring and still had a smile on his face and found ways to keep putting smiles on ours
Couldn’t be more proud of him
I will always share stories about him
Look forward to the day we all get to see him again
Love you DanielSon
Thank you for laughing and loving so many of us and doing it in your original, authentic, and wonderful “one-of-a-kind” kinda way
PS: Dan wanted to sign off with these words: “Thanks for the ride, I truly do love you all”…….
