Douglas W. Suss, 62, of Sioux Falls, SD died unexpectedly at his home on Monday June 26, 2017.

Visitation with family will be Sunday, July 2, beginning at 1:00 pm with a short time of sharing at 2:30 pm, at Heartland Funeral Home in Brandon, SD.

Douglas Wayne Suss was born March 31, 1955 in Windom, MN, to Paul and Louella (Bailey) Suss. After high school, Dugan graduated from St. Cloud State with a degree in marketing. On May 31, 1980 Dugan married JoAnn Heitkamp in Adrian, MN. To this union, two children were born; Nick and Holly. Dugan worked many years in radio, television and print media advertising, and was most recently employed by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire.

Dugan truly enjoyed playing golf and watching sporting events. He looked forward to March Madness and the Final Four basketball tournaments, making many trips to attend the games. Dugan was gifted with a wicked sense of humor and was a wisecracker; he had a nickname for everyone. He was loyal to his friends, loved old cars, working on his lawn and gardening. But most of all he adored his family. Watching Holly run track and attending car shows with Nick were some of his most favorite times with his children. Dugan was excited to become a Grandpa in a few weeks to Nick and Emily’s son, Jaxton. Having the kids over for his famous homemade pizza created many of the memories that will be cherished by his family.

Grateful for having shared his life are his two children, Nick (Emily) Suss, Brandon, SD and Holly Suss, Sioux Falls, SD; his mother, Louella Suss, Waterford, WI; seven siblings, Roger, Beaverton, OR, Charlie (Crista) Brookfield, WI, Stanley, Sioux Falls, Frank (Nancy), Jacksonville, FL, Jeff (Mary), Luling, LA, Sharon (Verlin) Ailts, Yankton, and Michelle (Phil) Glembin, Waterford, WI; and many nieces and nephews.

Dugan was preceded in death by his father, Paul Suss; two siblings, Joan and Craig; and his sister-in-law, Christie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dugan Suss family.

Richard “Dick” Hampton, 88, of Luverne, formerly of Adrian, MN, died Monday February 20, 2017, at the Veteran’s Home in Luverne.

Rosetta “Rosie” Faustina (Krahn) Hampton, 83, Luverne, formerly of Adrian, MN, died September 28, 2013 at the Sanford Hospice of Luverne, MN.

Graveside Services for both Richard and Rosie will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Adrian Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

In loving memory of Ophelia Gaye, or as most people know her, Jocelia D. Shar. Ophelia, 40, of Sioux Falls, died Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice Home in Sioux Falls.

Visitation will be 6:00~10:00 PM, Friday, June 23, 2017, at New Hope Community Church, 1001 E. 6th St., Sioux Falls (6th and Cliff). Funeral Services will begin at 9:00 AM, Saturday, June 24, also at New Hope Community Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery of Sioux Falls.

Ophelia was born on June 14, 1976, in Gwein Town, Grand Gedeh, Liberia, West Africa, under the union of Mr. Jeremiah D. Shar and Mrs. Nancy T. Shar. She started her elementary in Gray D. Allison Elementary and JR High School in 1981-1990, at Barclay Training Center (BTC), Monrovia, Liberia, Africa. In 1990, Ms. Gaye left Liberia with her parents and her older sister, Sarah S. Gaye, and her nieces and nephews, to the Ivory Coast, as a refugee. In 2004, she was blessed to resettle in America with her two beautiful children, Cynthia and Victoria.

Ophelia loved music. She was an outgoing person who loved people and helping them. She was a loving and caring mother. Everybody loved her in our family and community. She was a strong believer of God. Jocelia D. Shar will be missed by everyone. We love you, but God loves you most.

Ophelia Gaye (Jocelia Shar) was blessed with three beautiful children; Cynthia Shar, Victoria Gaye, Michelle Gaye. Ms Gaye was the youngest of seven children; Lucy S. Shar — deceased, Nancy K. Shar, Sarah Shar Gaye, Josephe B. Shar, Benjamin L. Shar –deceased, Charles D. Shar, Ophelia Shar Gaye —deceased.

Cheryl Marie Mammenga, 65, Brandon, passed away Monday, June 12, 2017, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Visitation with family present will be 2:00 – 4:00 pm, Sunday, June 18, 2017, with a short Prayer Service at 4:00 pm, at Heartland Funeral Home.

Cheryl Marie Simmons was born May 21, 1952, in Litchfield, MN, to William and Harriet (Hall) Simmons. She grew up in the area and graduated from Litchfield High School before attending Concordia College. Upon graduation, Cheryl moved to California where she managed several restaurants. Cheryl moved back to Sioux Falls in 1994, and began working in the banking industry. In August 2004, Cheryl married James Mammenga.

Cheryl loved her pets–the more, the merrier. She also loved to garden, cook, quilt, sew, and be surrounded by her grandchildren. Cheryl loved attending all of her son Anthony’s soccer games and her daughter Amber’s choir and theatre performances. She was known as a dedicated and hardworking employee, as demonstrated by the several trips to Mexico and the Virgin Islands she won by exceeding her company’s goals.

Cheryl will be deeply missed by her husband, Jim; her children, Amber (Matt) Christensen of Brandon, and Anthony Millar of Sioux Falls. Her stepchildren, Timothy (Brenda) Mammenga of Bristol, SD, Jon Mammenga of Sioux Falls, Robert (Melissa) Mammenga of Breckenridge, MN, Megan (Joey) Okroi of Webster, SD, Mari Mammenga of Sioux Falls, and Kelli Mammenga of Appleton, WI; eleven grandchildren, Lily, Peter, Summer, Logan, Lainey, Tate, Chloe, Ian, Jackson, Levi, and Julie; her mother, Harriet Simmons of Sioux Falls; and three siblings, Tom (Mary) Simmons of Sioux Falls, Carol (Denny) Boysen of Wentworth, SD, and John (Mary) Simmons, Texas.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, William Simmons.

Carolyn Nelson, 74, Sioux Falls, beloved wife and mother, died Friday, June 9, 2017, at the Dougherty Hospice House, in Sioux Falls, SD.

Visitation will be held 4-7pm, Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Heartland Funeral Home, Brandon, SD. Per the wishes of Carolyn, there will be no formal funeral service.

Carolyn was born on December 18, 1942, in Baker City, OR. Shortly thereafter, she moved to a farm near Bonesteel, SD. She was engaged to Lyly Nelson in 1964 and the two were married on July 3, 1965, at First Lutheran Church in downtown Sioux Falls, SD. Their son, Keith, was born in January of 1969.

For nearly five decades the family called Mission Hill, SD, home. Carolyn was active in the local Lutheran church, and volunteered her time whenever needed. She enjoyed her family, church, gardening, planting flowers, and working the grounds on their acreage. For the past nineteen years, Lyle and Carolyn had the privilege of avoiding the Midwest winters and were snow-birds traveling to their winter home in Mission, TX.

Carolyn was a stay at home mom when Keith was young, and then worked part time for the lunch program at the Yankton Public School System. In addition, she enjoyed working and visiting with people, and she also accepted a weekend position at a grocery store giving away food samples to customers.

In the fall of 2016, Lyle and Carolyn relocated to Sioux Falls, SD to be closer to their son, Keith.

Carolyn will be deeply missed by her husband, Lyle Nelson, and her son, Keith Nelson.

Abby Lyn Horsley

Abby Lyn Horsley, 22, Hastings, NE, formerly of Tea, was born October 15th, 1994 and went to be with Jesus, June 4th, 2017. Abby loved life and lived it to the fullest. Her smile and laugh were infectious and touched hearts and lives of those who knew her.

Public visitation with family present will be 5-7pm, Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Faith Family Church, in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life will be 1:00pm, Friday, June 9, at Faith Family Church (8th St and Spring Ave. Sioux Falls). Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Abby was very involved in church growing up, with the youth group, dance team and music programs. She grew up in Tea, SD and attended Tea Area School. She was involved in music and sports but especially loved basketball. Her tenacious spirit and commitment to her team mates and the game was the same way she approached everything she did in life. She then moved to Hastings, NE where she attended and graduated Xenon Beauty Academy in Grand Island, NE in 2016. She was valedictorian of her class. Abby worked at Blondies Salon in Hastings, NE.

Abby is survived and will be deeply missed by her parents, Gary & Rhonda Horsley of Tea, SD; one brother, Austin (Adrienne) and nephew, Archer Horsley, Sioux Falls; one sister, Nicole Horsley, Tea, SD; grandmother, Beverly Horsley, Sioux Falls, formerly of Wessington Springs, SD; and grandmother Helen Hoglund, Lake Norden, SD; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Abby was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Gerald Horsley and Gene Hoglund; and one uncle, Dave Eggebraaten.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Abby’s memory.

Sandi Carlson, 79, Brandon, died Thursday, June 01, 2017, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Memorial Services will be 11:00am, Monday, June 5, 2017, at Celebration United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 10am.

Sandra Lee Matson was born April 21, 1938, to George SR. and Arlie (Blanchar) Matson, in Sherburn, MN. She attended school and graduated from Trimont High School. Sandi then attended Mankato State University for three years before she was united in marriage to John Carlson on February 7, 1959. The couple settled in Spencer, IA, to start their family where Sandi also finished her teaching degree. She started teaching Phy Ed in Spencer until 1978, when the family moved to Brandon. Sandi started as a librarian in the Brandon school system, coached volleyball, and taught reading skills until retiring in 2002.

Sandi will be remembered as an awesome cook by her family. She loved animals and was often seen walking her dog at Big Sioux Rec in Brandon. She was an avid bird watcher and was involved in a bird watching group in Sioux Falls. John and Sandi’s favorite place was their farm on the lake at Trimont. Sandi loved music and enjoyed hunting agates, both of which carried over to her grandchildren. All who knew Sandi knew of her love for sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, and Gophers.

Sandi will be deeply missed by her husband of 58 years, John Carlson; three children, Kim (Alan) Johnson, Willmar, MN, Scott Carlson, Brandon, and Randy (Valerie) Carlson, Brandon; four grandchildren, Abbey, (Matt) Roisum, Seth Johnson, Jake Carlson, and Courtney Carlson; one great-grandchild, Hadley Roisum; one sister, Linda Lillegard, Omaha, NE; and one sister-in-law, Sylvia Matson.

Sandi is preceded in death by her parents and one brother, George Matson, JR.

Larry Dean Robertson, 63, Sioux City, died Thursday, May 25, 2017, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls S.D.

Per Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and services will be at a later date.

Larry Dean Robertson was born June 21 1953, the son of Bruce and Marilyn (Luft) Robertson in Sioux City, IA. He graduated from Central High School in 1972 and then served in the U.S. army. Larry married Shawn McBride, June 27, 1981. To this union a son (Jeffrey) was born. He was employed for many years at Wilson Trailer, retiring due to poor health.

Larry is survived by son, Jeffrey, (Mara) Robertson; and granddaughter, Evelyn, of Pierson, IA; three siblings, Pam Robertson, Dennis Robertson & Steve Robertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Susan Anderson, and Cheryl Banys.

Steve Wilson, 54, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, May 28, 2017, at his residence.

Steve was born December 13, 1963, in Dell Rapids, SD, to Dean and Nona (Ervin) Wilson. He grew up on the family farm east of Montrose, SD, where he attended school and graduated from Montrose High School in 1981.

Steve loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He was also an avid gun collector.

Steve will be greatly missed by his four siblings, Shari Nordstrom, Rapid City, SD, Doug Wilson, Baltic, SD, Ken (Cheryl) Wilson, Sioux Falls, SD, Cindy (Aaron) Knudson, Sioux Falls, SD; 11 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Nona Wilson; and one niece, Stacy Wilson.

Ellen Mae Haselhuhn

Ellen M. (Martin) Haselhuhn, 91, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of West Liberty, died Monday, May 29, 2017 at her home.

A visitation with family present will be held Friday, June 2, 2017, from 6-8pm at Hope Community Church 27213 473rd. Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57108 with a prayer service at 7pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 3, at Hope Community Church with Rev. Mike Gaudet officiating. The burial will be at the North English, IA cemetery at 5:30 pm.

Ellen was born in North English, IA on April 8, 1926, the daughter of Ethel (Coates) and Glen Martin. She was married to Garland E. Haselhuhn, May 21, 1950, in Ottumwa, IA.

Ellen was a 1944 graduate of North English High School and later graduated from the University of Iowa in 1972. She worked for John Deer while living in Ottumwa. She and her husband Garland, owned Garland’s Super Value Grocery Store and Garland’s Pizza – a place for the youth and families of West Liberty. She later worked at Medical Labs at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics and the Laboratory for Political Research at the U of I and retired from the department of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1999.

Ellen was a member of the West Liberty School Board, the American Legion Auxiliary and president of Chi Mota Women’s club and West Liberty Band parents. Ellen was a founding member of Faith Baptist Church in West Liberty, Bethany Baptist church in Iowa City, and later Hope Community Church in Sioux Falls, SD. Ellen was an active member of the community and school district, as she substitute taught, and accompanied for many vocal and instrumental solos and concerts. During her earlier years, Ellen accompanied The King’s Singers a men’s quartet. She served as pianist and organist, music director and coordinator in the churches she attended throughout her life. Ellen will always be remembered for her love of family, friends, music, beautiful flowers and faith in Christ.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Hiatt of Huntsville, AL, daughter, Marcia (Mike) Gaudet of Sioux Falls, SD, a son, Jeff (Shelly) Haselhuhn of Humboldt, IA and daughter Michelle (Douglas) Young of Overland Park, KS. Seven grandsons, Gavin Gaudet of Sioux Falls, SD, Jarod Haselhuhn of Humboldt, IA, Jesse Haselhuhn of Ames, IA, Jason Haselhuhn of Clive, IA Jonah Haselhuhn of Ames, IA Eric (Beth) Young of Kansas City, MO and Evan (Brianna) Young of Cedar Rapids, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and her husband Garland.
